Home Study Course FAQs

Q) I’m expecting a baby and very excited about learning hypnosis for childbirth! Why should I learn Hypnobabies with a home study course? Isn’t it enough to just read a book and listen to a CD or two?
A) That depends on what your goals are for your baby’s birth. If you want a more relaxed birth, then simply reading a book and listening to a CD may be enough for you to feel satisfied with your birthing experience. If however, what you are looking for is a truly comfortable and much easier birth, you are going to have to prepare for it with dedication! Hypnobabies is very successful in this area, and has “homework” that needs to be done to achieve success.

Q) What is the difference between Hypnobabies and a regular hypno-birthing course?
A) Please see our Unique Benefits page for information on this very important question

Q) What kind of “work” will I be doing as I prepare for my child’s birth using Hypnobabies?
A) Surprise! This is the easiest thing that you will do as you prepare for your baby’s birth. You’ll take some time for yourself every day learning to relax deeply, listen to beautiful messages (CDs) about having a comfortable and easy birthing experience, and become more confident that pregnancy is a normal, healthy state of being and the miracle of birth is peaceful. You’ll read important information (in your Hypnobabies workbook) on how to make excellent birthing choices and plan the birth of your dreams. Best of all, you’ll meet your sweet baby and become in tune with your own needs, your own body, your own mind.

Q) How will I learn my Hypnobabies Home Study Course?
A) There are 5 Hypnobabies classes in the course: you’ll learn each Class in one week’s time and then move on to the next Class. Each Class you’ll be learning and participating in a new part of the program, first by reading a bit in your Hypnobabies workbook, and by listening to one hypnosis “script” daily, (that week’s CD), and next by learning and practicing a cue for instant self-hypnosis called the “Finger-drop Technique”. This is important since it will be the way that you enter hypnosis when you have a contraction during your labor. Please be aware that it is very important that you listen to one CD track every day (approx. 30 – 35 minutes each) and practice your “Finger-drop Technique” several times each day. (30 seconds to 2 minutes each practice) The more you practice and participate in the program the more comfortable you’ll feel when your Birthing Time actually arrives.

Q) I’m a single Mom. Can I use the Hypnobabies Home Study Course Successfully?
A) Yes! If you are a single mom, or one whose significant other will not be able to participate in your Hypnobabies program with you, please feel confident that you can do this by yourself. Even though there are many references to the Birth Partner throughout our course, (for the Hypno-moms who do have one) Hypnobabies is easily used very successfully by women who are learning the program by themselves. Gerald Kein developed his original Painless Childbirth hypnosis techniques (which we use in Hypnobabies) so that women could feel confident doing them alone if they so chose. Our Hypnobabies self-hypnosis and deepening cues are easily learned and used, and we provide you with a Birth Guide CD which is similar to having a Birth Partner whisper powerful Hypnobabies cues and phrases to you through your Birthing Time, keeping you in hypnosis; relaxed and comfortable. Many Hypnobabies moms have successfully used our program by themselves and had a wonderful birthing, and you can too!

Q) Will I be able to move around and be awake, and aware of my body and my baby during my labor using hypnosis?
A) Absolutely! Being in Hypnobabies’ “Eyes Open Childbirth Hypnosis” is not like being asleep or detached from the sensations of your baby’s birth. You are awake and aware of everything going on around you, and you experience baby’s every movement. You remain deeply in hypnosis, confident and calm, even while moving and changing positions. Your Hypnobabies hypno-anesthesia allows you to experience all the power of childbirth without the discomfort.

Q) I only have 2- 3 weeks left before my baby is due! Do I have time to complete the Hypnobabies Home Study Course for Expectant Mothers?
A) Unfortunately…no.

PLEASE NOTE: Our Hypnobabies Home Study Course for Expectant Mothers is a 5 week childbirth hypnosis course. This means that it takes 5 weeks to *learn* the deep hypnosis techniques that will enable you to have a much easier and more comfortable birthing, and then you will need time to *practice them* as well for several weeks. For the best benefit, it is actually optimum for you to have at least 2 months or more time to complete your Hypnobabies course and practice our hypnosis cues and techniques. ** Please order by (at least) 7 months of pregnancy to allow for enough time to complete and practice our childbirth hypnosis course materials and techniques. We want all of our Hypno-Moms to enjoy their baby’s birth to the fullest!

Q) Does Hypnobabies really work?
A) Yes! For those who learn, practice and use our Hypnobabies techniques correctly and as directed, the results are wonderful, easier and much more comfortable than any other natural childbirth method. Please see our Unique Benefits pagefor some insightful quotes from home study moms, and visit our Birth Stories page. Real moms using real hypnosis…with real success.

Q) Is the Hypnobabies self-study program as effective as taking the classes?
A) We asked the experts; our Hypnobabies Moms: “Could our wonderful Hypnobabies Home-Study Course ‘graduates’ tell us how it worked for YOU?”

Karli F: I had a beautiful baby boy 5 weeks ago using the home-study course. This is baby #5 for me, and natural (drug-free) birth #3. It made a world of difference. I’ve never had a bad birth experience, but this time it was so beautiful and peaceful and calm. Some of the best $ I’ve ever spent.

Erica H: When people have asked me this question. I always say it is effective if you DO it. I think for first time mom’s the class could be very helpful, just because you learn SO much when it comes to what is going on childbirth education-wise. But if you are dedicated to actually doing the hypnosis, then of course the home study course will be just as effective since the hypnosis techniques are the same!  🙂

Jeannie C: So good I barely made it to the hospital! I was a so comfortable at home I didn’t go until 20 minutes before delivery.

Genie M: I agree with Erica. I had my son 8 weeks ago using the home study. He was my 2nd baby in 18 months. No real issues with my daughters birth, but this time around was amazing. My big guy was 9.9 and 23 1/2″ and came out staring at the ceiling. My mid wife said that she was so glad that she didn’t have any “at risk” teenagers in the room observing my son’s birth (I previously ok’d this if she had some) because I made it look like the easiest task of the day!
Also, my husband was deployed through the duration of my pregnancy. The hypnobabies home course REALLY helped me. Here I was by myself, raising a toddler, working full time and wondering what my husband was dealing with as he helped shut down a dangerous base in Iraq. I feel like I hardly stressed at all during that time thanks to what I learned from my Hypnobabies course.

Sarah M: It does work! It takes a lot of self motivation and dedication but it is worth it! We had our daughter after an hour and a half long labor before the midwife arrived!

Rachel P: Since I did not take both, I can’t compare. I will say that I loved the home study course. I spent 30 minutes with the hypnosis during early labor. According to my midwife, my labor progressed much more quickly than expected for a first birth! She had to RUSH to my house for the birth!

Diana A: I did the home course and it worked great. Most of the work is listening on your own anyway. The easy part is reading the book. The challenging part was doing the tracks everyday. I did use a doula and we did a practice run but it wasn’t really necessary as I got to the hospital at 5cm totally feeling great and had my baby an hour later. If I have another it will be at home or birthing center as the monitoring made me lose focus a little but after I got in the tub it was smooth sailing. Good luck. It is one of the best things I ever did!

Kim H: My 3rd baby was a hypnobaby with the home study course. I labored all night while sleeping, yes sleeping, and made it to the birth center only 20 minutes before our baby girl was born! I highly recommend the home study course.

Amanda C: My second birth was Hypnobabies and my midwife didn’t believe I was in labour. Before I finally convinced her to check me, she had said she would before she headed home. I was 8 and complete and as above barely made it to the hospital. We left at 5:45, got there at 6:10, and my dd was born at 6:25…we think. It was so fast my midwife didn’t look at the clock. 😉 But yes, you do have to do it. (practice)   🙂

Jackie L: I’m a first time mom and I did the class with my doula as the instructor. I did feel it when I wasn’t doing it and it’s amazing how much it works. I labored at home until it was about 3mins apart. Didn’t do horrible in the ride there, about… 45 mins… got there and did have a little distraction with getting admitted and checked (8cm) etc at the birthing center but then once I got in the tub I was good. Total 12 hours… less than 3 in the birthing center (about 1 1/2 in tub)… less than 10 mins in the very active ending and 2 pushes because I just couldn’t hold it to breathe her down anymore. It was overall easy and some parts were painful when I got distracted, but once she was out everything was smooth there on out.

Christa J: It is very effective! We have very busy schedules so my hubby and I enjoyed going through the book at home together & it inspired us to research even more and discuss our plans and hopes. It brought us closer & more united.
As for my birthing, I began feeling pressure waves at 11 PM and they were only about five minutes apart so we immediately went to meet our midwife. I got into Birthing pool three hours later, and then three hours after that my first child was born. I found that one of the most effective techniques was when my husband would place his hand on my shoulder and say ‘release’. That reminded me to relax my shoulders my back and neck muscles, and made the pressure waves much more bearable. The birthing was so quick and much easier than I had anticipated. I’m already looking forward to becoming pregnant again and implementing the Hypnobabies techniques for my second birthing & doing an even more effective job at it.

Meghanne C: I can’t say if it’s AS effective since there are no actual classes offered within hours of me, but the home study did the job! My husband has commented that he’ll stay home with our daughter while I have this baby since I “didn’t need him” …last time! I actually think I may have been distracted by attending a class instead of studying on my own, but as I said I didn’t have the opportunity to take a class so I can’t say that for certain.

Amanda S: It was VERY effective! We arrived at the hospital calm and comfortable at 9cm. When I walked up to the desk the nurses laughed at us and said we’d be walking the halls or going home. I was holding my VBAC baby 40 minutes later. They actually had to admit us after she was born. It was an amazing experience. We’re waiting for another Hypnobaby right now and expect nothing but the best again! 🙂

Amanda W: I’d be interested in taking the class next time to find out, but I had a wonderful birth experience with the home-study course. This was baby #3 and I’m SO glad that I looked into this and did it. I was able to have an unmedicated birth wit…h no IV or any other procedure, because I was so well educated and in control. I agree that you definitely have to make sure you do the work for the course though. I found it to be a little time consuming, but well worth it. I was laughing with my DH and friend (playing doula) and enjoying myself until the last 15 minutes, when I had to really concentrate and follow my body’s instincts. I definitely recommend studying up on the pushing phase and being prepared. My DH loved it too! Instead of me pushing him away because I was in pain (like my previous births), he felt very connected and a part of the whole process.

Cassie F: There were no instructors in the area so I took the Home Study course. I have the type of personality that does really well with setting my own schedules and sticking to them, so I was really good about doing the practice and I think that …made a world of difference. I did actually have a pain-free birth, have no idea how long I was in my birthing time because it just flew by, and most of all I felt like I had the information to make the best decision for me and my baby regarding anything that might have come up. Wouldn’t have traded it for the world!

Kirstin R: l I did the home study course & loved it – it made me enjoy the last months of my pregnancy even more, I was so positive & confident & relaxed. Early “labor” was a breeze & I waited to go to the hospital once my pressure waves were just a few minutes apart. I had my son just 3 1/2 hrs after arriving at the hospital. The drs & nurses were amazed at how smoothly & quickly it went, especially since he was my first baby. I can’t wait to do it again!

Leah M: I did Hypnobabies home study course with my 3rd birth. It was so easy I just made sure I put the cd player in my room and listened to the tracks at night and most nights I would fall asleep while listening. My husband is deployed so I did the course by myself and during labor I listened to the tracks and shockingly had a pain free birth. I would never give birth without Hypnobabies. I was a total skeptic because I’ve given birth before and it was hard, so I wasn’t expecting for it to work. They all commented on how easy I made it seem and it was 🙂

Maggie S: I used the home study course but started earlier than suggested. I had the perfect, easy, totally pain free natural birth.

Vanessa G: Yes, the Hypnobabies home study course is amazing! I loved it. I had my share of fears getting ready for birth and Hypnobabies helped me trust my body’s ability to give birth peacefully and naturally. My birth (my first baby) was totally comfortable and the midwife said I made it look “easy”! Even during the challenging moments I was able to stay calm, focused, and truly relaxed. I can’t recommend it enough for moms who want to have a comfortable natural childbirth as well as an enjoyable pregnancy. Love, love, LOVE Hypnobabies!

Q) “I am trying to decide whether to attempt a VBAC or schedule a repeat c-section. Is the Hypnobabies course worth my time and money if I end up opting for a c-section?”
A) From our experts; our Hypno-Moms: ANSWERS HERE

I DIDN’T DO HYPNOBABIES FOR #1, DOES IT WORK FOR #2 THEN?

Q) Although I did natural birthing techniques for baby #1… I had a hard birth – a long, stalled labor with Pitocin and an epidural.

I would like to do Hypnobabies for #2 but I wonder if it can work for me, since I’ve learned “other” techniques, and had such a negative birthing experience with #1.  I wonder if I would be able to maintain hypnosis when the familiar feelings/smells/sounds return… or would the traumatic memories of #1 override it?

Just curious if anyone else has had a similar experience- with a negative birthing experience first, and then a successful “hypno-birthing” experience next?

A) A lot of moms who have used Hypnobabies over the years have had similar circumstances to yours, and they have had beautiful births. Many of our second-time moms who are first-time Hypnobabies moms don’t believe they are well into their birthing time until they feel that familiar urge to push since their hypnosis techniques keep them so relaxed, calm and comfortable. We call these, “healing births” and all moms deserve them!

Our Hypnobabies Childbirth Hypnosis program includes a Fear Release track that helps moms to ‘de-program’ from a prior traumatic birth so they can prepare for a subsequent baby’s birth from a place of calm and confidence. You might like to join our YAHOO support group for mothers who are using hypnosis for their births. You can ask your questions there and women who have had your experience will support and encourage you! The group also has Hypnobabies Instructors and Hypno-Doulas who provide information and support about using hypnosis for childbirth.

Q) How does hypnosis for childbirth work?

A) Short version: Like computer data entry. If you want to create a document to use later, you open one, enter the text and save the contents in a “file”, then give the file a name. Later, when you want to edit that document, you find the file name and open it, add to the document text and save it again. When you are completely finished with your document, you find the file by its name, complete and ready, and print it out for your use.

In Hypnobabies, our “files” are our medical hypno-anesthesia “scripts” in the form of CD tracks and paper scripts, and all you have to do is *listen* to them. In doing so, you train your inner mind, just like entering text, what to accept. Each week, you add a little bit of training, just like the text in your document, and your inner mind creates a new belief system about childbirth. It accepts that the normal birthing sensations that you will have when you give birth; pushing, pulling, stretching, pressure sensations, will indeed be there, but without discomfort attached to them. You train it to accept cues and techniques to bring you deeper into relaxation and hypnosis, and when you use them on your birthing day, just like printing out your document, they are there for you automatically! Your mind is very powerful and is capable of creating the deepest physical relaxation possible as well as a very comfortable birthing experience. Use it!

A) Long version: Download our free Introduction to Hypnobabies CD, with a 20 minute explanation of what hypnosis and Hypnobabies are, and a special gift – our “Relax Me” hypnosis session, which allows you to actually experience deep relaxation and a hypnotic state, as well as learn a special cue that trains you to become calm and relaxed in any situation, which you can use for the rest of your life! Q) I’m a childbirth/medical/hypnosis professional/doula. Can I order this course and learn to teach couples childbirth hypnosis?
A) No. Our Hypnobabies Home Study Course is only for expectant mothers to use in preparation for their baby’s birth. It cannot be used to train anyone to become a childbirth hypnosis instructor, and professionals cannot “teach” Hypnobabies or any kind of birth hypnosis from this course. Only birth professionals who have been certified through Hypnobabies LLC by taking our Hypnobabies Instructor Training can teach Hypnobabies, and the Instructor materials are quite different.
