Sarah’s Hypnobabies Home Waterbirth Even Better Than Imagined

“I had a minute or so of rest and then all of a sudden had an intense urge to push. I had one strong wave and a big push and the baby’s head was born. One gentle push after and her body followed. She was absolutely perfect and healthy.”

I woke up at 4:30 in the morning of June 30th with mild cramping that felt like menstrual cramps. Deep down I knew that it was probably the beginning of pressure waves (Hypnobabies term for contractions), but I wasn’t quite sure. They were definitely more consistent than what I had been feeling before. I finally got up at around 530 and decided to go for a walk. My husband was still asleep so I woke him and told him we may be close. But my first birthing time (Hypnobabies term for labor) was so long that I assumed it would be in the next few days.

I went out for a walk and decided to listen to the “My Birthing Time Begins” track (Reminders of all the hypnosis tools for birthing). As I walked, I started to time the waves which still felt like just some mild to moderate cramping but were more timeable—every 4 minutes lasting 30-45 seconds. I got home and had breakfast with my 2.5-year-old daughter. I told her that it may be her baby sisters’ birthday and she said “I’m just a little bit worried that she’ll want to play with my toys” 😅. I told my husband this was probably it and I thought things may move quickly.

I decided to take a nap while they played downstairs. I slept from about 8-9 and “listened” to Easy First Stage (Hypnobabies main birthing time track) even though i still wasn’t 100% sure this was it because it just felt too quick.

I woke up at 9 and texted my midwife that I was having some cramping but still nothing that felt like real waves. She asked if my water had broken and i said no. But at 910 my water broke, and she headed my way. I texted my birth photographer and doula that she was on her way and they started to head over as well

I went downstairs and told my husband to go ahead and get the birth pool ready. By this time, I definitely knew i was having waves and they were starting to be back to back with a few breaks between some of them. I stayed in center (Hypnobabies technique for eyes open hypnosis) the whole time talking to my toddler and giving my husband instructions.

My midwife got to my house at 1130 and checked my vitals and listened to baby. “You’re healthy and normal”. The birth photographer showed up just a few minutes after and I remember saying that the baby was coming. I laid down on the couch for a minute and reached down and could feel baby’s head, but I was not experiencing any true stretching sensation.

I told my midwife I felt her head and they told me it was my last chance to jump in the water if I wanted. I hopped up and flopped into the pool at 1210 and rested over the side and drank a little electrolyte water. I had a minute or so of rest and then all of a sudden had an intense urge to push. I had one strong wave and a big push and the baby’s head was born. One gentle push after and her body followed. She was absolutely perfect and healthy. I didn’t realize until after the baby was born that my two-year-old had jumped in the birth pool as well and stayed there until it was time to birth the placenta.

What’s wild is that 1) things were so fast 2) I had no idea that my hypnosis was working until after I had her. I always wondered how I would know it was working. When I went back and looked at videos of my birthing time that were taken by my husband, I looked like I was in a trance. The whole room was calm because I was able to remain in hypnosis throughout my birthing time. Absolutely incredible.

I’m so grateful for Hypnobabies for giving me the chance to have almost exactly the birth I had imagined. Honestly, it was even better than I could have imagined.
