Monica’s Healing Hypnobabies Waterbirth

“My hypno-doula and midwife encouraged me to listen to my body  and my baby, and encouraged me through waves during my healing waterbirth. A short 66 minutes after my water broke, my daughter was born peacefully into the water, with the guidance and encouragement of my incredible support team. I was able to pull her to my chest and announce the sex. I felt the pulsing of the cord and was able to gently birth the placenta when it was time.”

I welcomed my second daughter yesterday with a beautiful and incredibly healing Hypnobabies birth.

New parent holding newborn after healing Hypnobabies waterbirthThe last few weeks were very tough physically. The day before my guess date (Hypnobabies term for due date) I decided to have a chiropractic adjustment, begin drinking an herbal mixture that my incredible hypno-doula recommended, and start listening to Come Out Baby (Hypnobabies track for encouraging baby to be born). By that evening waves (Hypnobabies term for contractions) had picked up and were coming close to every 15 minutes. The following morning my mucus plug came out and I opted for a membrane sweep at my 40-week appointment.

Things progressed quickly from there. Waves came inconsistently from 8-10 minutes. I used my tracks to nap and prepare for the birth throughout the day and practiced turning my switch off during my gentle waves.

I knew I needed to do two things before I would be ready to welcome my baby – say goodbye to my daughter and explain where mama was going, and work through some of the fear I had carried with me to her birth that I believe stalled progress.

I kissed my daughter goodnight at 7, explained that it was time for mama to have her baby, and laid down with the Fear Clearing track (Hypnobabies track to help release any fear). By the time I had finished the track, the waves had increased and were coming every 2-3 minutes. I think once I had gotten through the two things, I was worried about (my daughter and my fear) my body was finally ready to progress. I called my Hypno-doula and we decided it was time to head to the birthing center soon.

After a shower and some packing, we made our way to the birthing center and arrived around 9:30 pm. I used my tracks in the car to help make the ride more comfortable.

When we got to the birthing center, I consented to a cervical check sometime after 10 pm- I was 5 cm and 80% effaced. My hypno-doula helped me find positions to progress downward movement and opening. We had discussed my fears and she reminded me that every wave brought me closer to my baby, that pressure is progress. I decided to use the Hypnobabies Relaxation music without a track, and my doula cues me verbally and physically as waves approached. I used my switch and hypno-anesthesia through each wave.

Things picked up quickly, and my water broke around 12:30 am. The midwife checked my progress and I was complete. Almost immediately my body started involuntarily pushing during waves, and they quickly filled the tub. I vocalized through my powerful waves.

I got into the tub and tried to find comfortable positions. My hypno-doula and midwife encouraged me to listen to my body and my baby and encouraged me through waves. A short 66 minutes after my water broke, my daughter was born peacefully into the water, with the guidance and encouragement of my incredible support team. I was able to pull her to my chest and announce the sex. I felt the pulsing of the cord and was able to gently birth the placenta when it was time.

My husband held our daughter for a while as I transferred to the bed and got cleaned up. Even though my daughter was born with her hands next to her face, I only had one small tear and felt good. The staff let us stay with my daughter as long as we wanted, and she wasn’t weighed or measured for hours. My husband and I took turns holding her skin to skin and enjoyed the first few hours together.

My first birth did not go as planned and this was incredibly healing. Everyone told me how calm I was and how impressed they were with how peaceful the birth was. My husband, who was also still processing our first daughter’s birth, said he now understands why birth is beautiful.

Thank you Hypnobabies for this healing journey. And endless thanks to Amanda, my amazing hypno-doula, who has supported me for months and helped me have the birth I always wanted.
