Melissa’s Change of Plans Hypnobabies Hospital Birth

“I had Hypnobabies Birthing Day tracks (Hypnobabies hypnosis tracks like Easy First Stage) playing out loud in the room the entire time. I spent time on the birthing ball and walking/swaying the hallways.”

My birth story began on the afternoon of 9/3 when my water suddenly broke. I had not really felt any practice waves (Braxton Hicks) up until this point so I stayed at home a little while to see if they would start on their own. With no progress, we checked into the hospital the next morning.

My doctor and RNs were very supportive of my natural birth plan and made every accommodation to support me. My hypno-doula was beyond invaluable as well. I still had no progress after several hours so Cytotec was placed around 2 PM and by around 9 pm, I dilated to about 4 cm. I had Hypnobabies Birthing Day tracks (Hypnobabies hypnosis tracks like Easy First Stage) playing out loud in the room the entire time. I spent time on the birthing ball and walking/swaying the hallways. Pressure waves (Hypnobabies word for contraction) were pretty strong and consistent at this point and my husband and doula were great about applying counterpressure to my back. At this point, I was reaching exhaustion especially since I didn’t get much sleep the night before. I accepted some low dose morphine in my IV to help sleep through the night. This was so helpful, and I continued to dilate to 7.5 cms overnight.

Progress stalled early the next morning and we made a decision to augment with Pitocin. I continued to listen to my hypnosis tracks and use my birthing ball over the next three hours through Transformation (Hypnobabies word for transition). I did begin to lose focus at this point, I think just due to the nearly 48 hours that had elapsed since my birthing time began plus the intensity of the Pitocin. I began pushing efforts around 10 am. Baby was having a hard time making it under the pubic bone and I was truly exhausted by this point, so I opted for a vacuum assist with delivery which was successful and she was born within the next four sets of pushes. I struggled quite a bit from transformation (transition) on, but I certainly would not have made it as well as I did until that point without Hypnobabies, my hypno-doula, and my wonderful supportive husband.

Meet Miss Violet Ann, who weighed in at 5 lbs, 10 oz and 19 inches long. We are wonderfully in love with her!
