Up until 10/31/18 my husband had been deployed overseas and we were desperately hoping William would stay put long enough for him to make it back to the states and he did! I was scheduled to have my 40 wk apt 11/9 at 11 am but as we were getting ready that morning my waters released (8:45 am). Birthing waves (Hypnobabies word for contractions) did not start right away but with my history of precipitous births (1st son was born in a little under 2 hours from waters releasing to holding him), we went ahead and called the midwives to let them know today would be the day!

I decided to finish up a couple of chores before my waves started and busied myself around the house as I waited. At 9:23 am I had my first wave. Compared to my first birth (which hit me like a freight train starting out in transformation (Hypnobabies word for transition)) the first wave was similar to the practice waves I had been having the week prior. We timed a few and realized they were irregular but still called the midwives to let them know they had started.

They asked me to call back if they picked up, otherwise, they would be to my house at 11 am. As soon as we got off the phone the first intense wave rushed over me and I quickly realized my hope for a longer birthing time was not going to happen. We immediately called the midwives back, along with my doula and birth photographer to let them know they should all start heading our way.

I laid down on our couch and put on the Birthing Day Affirmation track to help immerse myself in positivity. I started to feel fear creep in from my first birth experience and knew the affirmations would help ground me. My doula and the photographer got to us first. My doula quickly realized I was panicking a little and helped me to regain my focus and calm down.

My husband took this opportunity to put our oldest down for a nap and started working through my birthing time “to do” list. Between two waves I decided I needed to empty my bladder. I quickly got off the couch with my husband’s help and headed towards the bathroom. I had two more waves in the short distance to the bathroom, but I was able to stop and remain calm through each. After the bathroom, I decided to get in bed and stay there. I desperately didn’t want to move any longer.

Shortly after I climbed in bed, one of the midwives arrived and realized I was very close to pushing. She quickly checked me, and I was already 9 cm. The news was very comforting because I wasn’t sure how much longer I was going to last if I was only a few cms dilated. The last of my birth team arrived as I was pushing. William Alexander was born with a true knot, 2 hrs and 34 mins after the release of my waters and 1 hr 56 mins after my first wave. I definitely did not have the discomfort free birth many women talk about, however, the techniques I learned through Hypnobabies made a monumental impact on the level of control I was able to maintain throughout my birthing time.

I turned to Hypnobabies when I found out I was pregnant with William because I was deeply afraid of birthing. My first left me traumatized and I knew the chances of having another precipitous birth was very high, so I knew I needed a program that would help me regain control. While I did not have a discomfort-free birthing, I did have the truly amazing and healing birth I needed. When Kerry says to trust the way Hypnobabies works uniquely for you, believe it, ladies! It truly does ❤️
