First Time Mom Morgan’s Hypnobabies Hospital Birth

“Between waves, I felt so calm and very deep into my hypnosis. When Stone’s head and shoulders came out my eyes were closed from pushing and my midwife yelled to me to open them so that I could grab him myself and bring him up- this was the most magical moment of my entire life.”

I woke up on the 4th feeling a bit discouraged, we had just seen our guess date (Hypnobabies word for due date) come and go. I felt so sure he was going to be here before his due date. I went about my lazy Sunday like normal, just watching tv. Around 1 pm I started to have some light pressure waves (Hypnobabies word for contractions) every 3-5 minutes that were noticeable but very manageable- I was able to walk, talk, eat as much as normal, complete some house chores, etc. I decided to go to my Nina’s house and walk to see if they would pick up- we walked and ate but things remained pretty much the same, but I texted my husband to pack the car just in case.

Unlike before with my practice waves, these waves lasted longer than 2 hours, but I still wasn’t sure if it was our time. I went home and listened to Strengthen my Birthing Time (Hypnobabies track to help strengthen birthing waves). When I came out of hypnosis, my waves definitely seemed to be stronger but also had spaced out quite a bit to 5 minutes apart. So, I decided to lay down and listen to some of my Hypnobabies tracks (Deepening Your Hypnosis and Fear Clearing). I noticed I was much more uncomfortable through the waves now and this was likely the real deal. During the next few hours I stayed in Center (Hypnobabies tool to remain comfortably in hypnosis while able to walk, talk, eat, etc.), I moved into several different positions in bed , took a bath, went to the recliner- and told my husband to sleep because I thought we might be going to the hospital in the next few hours.

Around 1:30 am on the 5th I woke him and told him I was ready to go as I was feeling shaky and kind of feverish. On our way to the hospital, I listened to my Birthing Time Begins and Easy First Stage (Hypnobabies main birthing day track), which I finished listening to in triage. When we got to the hospital I was 3 cm and fully effaced- Baby Stone was very low so they decided to admit me. The rest of the birthing time until pushing, I listened to Deepening Your Hypnosis (Hypnobabies track to deepen the level of hypnosis) and Fear Clearing (Hypnobabies track to release any fears) on repeat as they made me feel most comfortable.

I really liked the hospital bed and how I could move into so many different positions to feel more comfortable and productive. The nurses were so respectful of my birthing plan and did so well with not talking to me when my eyes were closed and I was Off. My husband also applied counter pressure to my hips and lower back during waves as it was what I felt I really needed. 2 hours after I was admitted, my membranes ruptured during a wave- I was really excited because I know sometimes the waters don’t break on their own.

My husband called the nurse in to tell her my water had broken and that I would like to be checked again- I was 7.5cm (this is when I called Brianna, the amazing gal that took these photos). They called my midwife to let her know I was progressing quickly. When she got there, I told her I was feeling pushy during waves. She checked me and told me I was about 9.5cm and I could start pushing a bit if that’s what felt best. So, I started my Pushing Baby Out track (Hypnobabies track just for pushing) out loud. After pushing instinctively for about an hour in an upright position and over the toilet as well, I told her I felt I wasn’t being productive enough with my pushes. She offered to do some perineal massage with mineral oil and I accepted.

I decided to get on my back to push and have a bit of assistance from my husband and a nurse who pushed my legs towards my face when I was pushing. Breathing my baby out wasn’t feeling right or working for me, so I “purple pushed” for around what I think was 45 minutes to an hour, and only pushing during my waves, roaring after each push.

Between waves, I felt so calm and very deep into my hypnosis. When Stone’s head and shoulders came out my eyes were closed from pushing and my midwife yelled to me to open them so that I could grab him myself and bring him up- this was the most magical moment of my entire life. I brought him up to my chest and the rest is history. 19 hours of birthing time, 13ish being active, and 6 of those 13 being at the hospital- we got our boy here safely without any pain medication or intervention.

Tyler was THE MOST perfect birthing partner- the whole time he encouraged me by telling me how amazing I was doing, how beautiful I looked, how proud of me he was. He also was a huge help in applying counter pressure to my hips and back- I know it wasn’t easy doing that for 6 hours. Not once did I feel the need to yell or cuss him (I actually only cussed once right after a big push), I was just so thankful that he was so involved and so helpful. I feel like a whole new person with so much more love to give to our baby boy and to my life partner, Tyler.

I’m so thankful Hypnobabies helped me to achieve the birth that I so longed for. I have recommended it to so so many expecting mamas and will definitely be using it if and when we decide to have another baby. Also, my newborn loooves the background music to sleep to at night and I love listening to it as well.
