Brittany’s Hypnobabies Hospital Water Birth

Brittany’s Hypnobabies Hospital Water Birth

“I enjoyed vocalizing during my intense waves and breathed deeply. Before I realized what was going on, I breathed out my daughter’s head with a “pop.” I was so surprised I even declared “was that her head?!” One more wave and I pushed out my daughter’s shoulders and body. I was so shocked she was already there as I was waiting for things to get a lot harder or take a lot longer. 1 hour after the midwife told me I was 4 cm dilated, and 2 hours after getting to the hospital, she was in my arms!”

I’ve been on cloud nine since my experience birthing my second child, and first hypno-baby, Scarlett Maeve. As I neared my 41st week of pregnancy there were few signs that my birthing day was approaching. As talks of an impending induction were starting, I desperately wanted my body to start my birthing time (Hypnobabies term for labor) by itself. I hoped to avoid an induction as I experienced a cascade of interventions with my first, I hoped to avoid this time round (water breaking, Pitocin, coupling waves, swelling, epidural). In an attempt to distract myself and calm my nerves I went out for a day of shopping on Oct. 24th with my Mom, husband, and 8-year-old son. This fun relaxing day seemed to do the trick as my water broke while we were out at around 2:30 pm!

Birthing waves (Hypnobabies term for contractions) started soon after. I welcomed each wave as they came every 15 minutes. By the time we reached my house, packed up my son, and sent him off with my Mom I knew I wanted to start listening to my hypnosis tracks. I continued to listen to my tracks throughout the night and my birthing waves got closer together and more intense – but still very manageable. I took a break to eat some dinner and feel like I lost hypnosis at this point. My waves became much more intense and I found it hard to get back into hypnosis. At 9:45 pm I told my husband I thought we should head to the hospital soon as my waves were coming every 4 min and lasting about 50 seconds long. We had a 45 min drive to the hospital, and I didn’t want to push my luck. During my pregnancy, I was worried about the drive to the hospital, but I actually found this time to be very relaxing (the seat warmer and the dark quiet road were quite calming) and I was able to get back into hypnosis.

By the time we reached the hospital at 10:30 pm my waves must have been about 3-4 min apart and were feeling significantly more powerful. When we arrived, the nurses checked us in and phoned my midwife letting her know that things seemed to be progressing quickly. The nurses checked my vitals and I asked if they could fill up the birthing pool. My midwife arrived at 11:30 pm and asked to check how far along I was before I got into the pool. I agreed to the check and she said I was about 4-5 cm dilated. At this point I looked at my husband panicked, feeling like I wouldn’t be able to do this and said “only 4 cm…?! Why are my waves so close together then??” My midwife reassured me saying my cervix was very thin and elastic and was a cervix that was ready to open.

I got into the birthing tub and immediately felt more relaxed. I had on my Easy First Stage (Hypnobabies main birthing time track) and refocused myself. I kept repeating to myself that “we don’t birth by numbers” and did my best to relax my whole body. The water did wonders for helping to alleviate discomfort and reminding me to relax all my muscles. Not long after getting into the tub I started to feel a lot of pressure in my bottom during my birthing waves. I knew things must be moving along but thought I still had a while to go as I was only 4 cm dilated. Soon the pressure was building during each wave and felt very powerful. I enjoyed vocalizing during my intense waves and breathed deeply.

1 hour after the midwife told me I was 4 cm dilated, and 2 hours after getting to the hospital, she was in my arms! She was born on October 25th at 12:28 am. I’m so grateful to Hypnobabies for giving me the tools and confidence to achieve the natural, uncomplicated, medication free birth I had hoped for! Every day since I’ve been replaying her beautiful birth in my mind and feeling so proud of what my body was able to accomplish! Such an unforgettable way to welcome our little girl into the world, couldn’t have dreamed of a better experience
