Audrey’s Completely Comfortable Hypnobabies Birth

“Our daughter was born 3 hours after my water broke. She turned herself during my birthing time (Hypnobabies word for labor) and I had a completely comfortable birth. She knew exactly what position she needed to be in for her birthing time to begin.”

At my 37-week appointment, I was 37+1 and had not experienced being pregnant beyond this point. (I have a history of preterm birthing time and birth with my sons.) My midwife checked and my baby was in a sort of LOP/ LOT position. She suggested I start some Spinning Babies moves. I started doing the 3 Sisters on a nightly basis. I also decided to see a chiropractor to help get baby in the best position.

However, knowing baby wasn’t in an “ideal” position caused a lot of anxiety for me. I started thinking about how I had heard the 3rd baby is the wild card and as much as I tried to push it out of my mind, it really did get to me. I did my Fear Clearing session (Hypnobabies track to release fear) a few times to help ease my mind.

At my 38-week appointment, I was 38+1 and my midwife checked my baby’s position. My baby was still LOP but head down. I wanted her to check me because I had been having some waves (Hypnobabies word for contractions) and wanted to know if they were making any progress because I have a history of fast births (My first son was born 9.5 hours start to finish and my second son was born 6.5 hours start to finish). She checked me and I was 3cm, 80% effaced, and baby’s head was -3 station.

After my appointment, I was feeling rather discouraged that my baby was still LOP. I decided to read some positive Hypnobabies birth stories about babies not being LOA or ROA, and it hit me. I said out loud to myself, “my baby knows what position she needs to be in to be born.” I felt a wave of relief come over me and I finally felt at peace and okay my baby’s LOP position.

That night around 9 pm, I went to bed and began listening to my Joyful Pregnancy Affirmations, as I had done every night before. When it was over it was 10 pm. I was getting myself situated and comfortable for the night. I rolled over and felt a pop and then wetness. I immediately got out of bed and fluid was trickling down my legs. I was shocked because, with my boys, my water didn’t break until I was pushing. I alerted my husband and then went to the bathroom to clean up. I then called the midwife, but because I wasn’t having any waves, she told me to rest in bed and call back when the waves were 10 minutes apart. I then called my mom to update her because she was going to meet us at the hospital to hang out with our sons. (When I got pregnant, they both said they wanted to be at the birth.)

It was now 10:20 pm and the waves started. They were very manageable and I was able to easily breathe through them. They were about 2-3 minutes apart, so I called the midwife back to let her know things were picking up really quickly so she told us to head in. My husband and I were getting our last-minute items packed up and then woke up our boys. It was at this time that my waves started to space out to about every 7-10 minutes which I was thankful for because I was able to concentrate more on getting our boys ready and out the door.

It was about 11:10 pm when we were pulling out of our driveway and almost immediately the waves started back up at every 2-3 minutes. Again, they were very easy to breathe through, but I really wanted to start getting in the Hypnobabies Zone so I was listening to my “Birthing Day Affirmations.”

By the time we got to the hospital and checked into triage, it was about 11:55 pm. My mom arrived right around 12:00 am. My pressure waves were beginning to increase in intensity and frequency, but I was still very comfortable and breathing through them. I was listening to my Hypnobabies hypnosis tracks and completely zoned “in” while a wave would come, even with the craziness of my 5-year-old and 3-year-old sons making lots of noise right next to me. The midwife came in around 12:25 am and checked me; I was at 5cm.

By about 12:35 am we were able to get into our room, which happened to be the same room both my boys were born in. I was so excited and comforted by this because during my visualization of this birth, I imagined her being born in the same room as her brothers. The nurse was filling up the birthing tub and working hard on getting it to the right temperature. It was at this point that I had 2 waves on top of each other and I really needed to focus through them. My mom noticed this so around 12:40 am she asked my boys if they wanted to go have a snack in the waiting room, which they did.

At 12:45 am, the tub was ready and I got in. The nurse left the room but a lab tech came in to draw some blood. I was having a wave and did my finger drop technique and went “in”. The tech said, “Oh, I thought you were going to have a pressure wave” (changed the language to be Hypnobabies friendly). I told her that I just did and she seemed to be in shock that I was so calm and relaxed during it. She then left and my husband and I were alone. It was so peaceful and calm.

Around 12:55 am I told my husband I had to use the bathroom so he helped me out of the tub. Once I got to the bathroom, I had 2 waves and I realized I did not have to use the bathroom but was going to need to push very soon. I walked out towards the tub, telling my husband, “I think I need to push soon.” I had one more wave and said, “Yeah, I have to push now.” I got into the tub while he went into the hall to find our nurse. She and another nurse came in and checked me.

I was completely dilated, so they asked if I could just breathe through the pressure waves and not push because the midwife was in another patient’s room. I said, “I can’t not push, my body is doing it.” I reached down and helped gently guide my daughter’s head out (which was absolutely incredible and something I didn’t do with my boys’ births). At this point, the midwife arrived and helped me lean back in the tub. With one last push, at 1:08 am, my daughter was born. I pulled her out of the water and onto my chest. A couple of minutes later my mom and boys came into the room. The intention was to have my sons in the room while she was born, but no one could believe she arrived so quickly. I will never forget the looks on my sons’ faces seeing their little sister for the first time.

Our daughter was born 3 hours after my water broke. She turned herself during my birthing time (Hypnobabies word for labor) and I had a completely comfortable birth. She knew exactly what position she needed to be in for her birthing time to begin.

In retrospect, the third baby being the “wild card” was true for me. However, it was not a negative thing the way I had always interpreted it. It was just different. It was “a new birth and baby unique unto itself” – a Hypnobabies affirmation!

I am forever grateful for choosing Hypnobabies as my tool for birthing all 3 of my babies. They were all welcomed into the world in the calmest, most peaceful way. I can honestly say I loved giving birth to each of them.
