“This was my second baby and my second time using Hypnobabies. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel like I used Hypnobabies to its fullest potential with my first (born in 2018), mostly because my birthing time with her was prodromal in nature and lasted four days. I used Hypnobabies in the beginning but then discontinued. With that birth, I ended up utilizing interventions at the hospital and though we were both perfectly healthy, I did ultimately stray from my original birth plan (unmedicated and a birth center).
With this pregnancy, I started listening to Hypnobabies at 28 weeks and remained as consistent as I could. There were two different weeks that I was sick and struggled to listen to my tracks so I decided to repeat those weeks to ensure I got the most out of the coursework and audios. I was feeling great about my upcoming birthing time. I was looking forward to it. I was motivated to have ‘redemption’ and the different audios, such as the affirmations and fear clearing, really helped solidify that this birth was different.
In the very late evening of 3/2, I started having some inconsistent pressure waves, and assumed they were practice waves. Nonetheless, I sent a text to my doula a little after midnight with a ‘by the way…but it’s probably nothing.’ She told me to get some sleep and keep her posted. I woke up a lot throughout the night with a lot of pressure to pee. My mucus plug was slowly coming out with each trip to the bathroom. I told my husband around 5:15am when he got up for work what was going on but sent him to work anyway because I wasn’t convinced that it was my birthing time. He was hesitant but I told him it was fiiiiiine. My doula checked in around 5:30am and I told her that the pressure waves were sometimes just uncomfortable and sometimes more intense; but still inconsistent. She told me to focus on movement throughout the day and to focus on all the oxytocin vibes. By 6:30am, I could no longer stay in bed so I decided to get up to prep my daughter’s lunch, and started listening to Joyful Pregnancy Affirmations. *I probably could have started listening to Birthing Day Affirmations but I was still in denial. Around 7am, I texted my husband telling him that I needed him to come home. It took him about an hour. In the meantime, I sat on my yoga ball and leaned over the arm of my couch listening to Your Birthing Time Begins. My daughter would occasionally rub my back and offered me water. She texted my husband from her iPad: ‘Daddy. Mommy is making the baby noises.’ I had been vocalizing through pressure waves.
When my husband got home, I decided to lay in bed in an exaggerated side lying position. My daughter stayed home from school since she would be coming to the birth center with us if we decided it was time to go. My husband reached out to my doula since I stopped answering her. He also called my midwife. I spoke to my midwife very briefly – just enough to agree to go to the birth center to get checked. She heard me vocalize through a pressure wave. My husband told her that I was worried that things were prodromal and she assured him that it wasn’t.
It took some time to get out of the house but we left by 11am and began the hour drive. I was a little more convinced that this *may* be my birthing time so I started listening to my Easier First Stage audio while in the car on my headphones.
Up until this point in my pregnancy, I had been in a great headspace – really believing in the idea that this pregnancy was different than my daughter’s. However, as my birthing time progressed on this day, I became somewhat overwhelmed with the idea that things would repeat and that things would drag on for days. I have texts to my doula with my worries while driving to the birth center and her response was:
We arrived at the birth center at 12:15pm and I was met outside by my midwife and doula. Also part of my birth team was a student midwife (who I had met previously and already consented to being present) and a nurse from the birth center. Upon arrival, I had a cervical check. When my midwife told me I was 8cm dilated, I cried and was instantly relieved. I really surrendered to my birth in that moment and all fears I had immediately left.
I spent the next 30ish minutes having pressure waves on the bed while leaning over a CUB pillow. This position felt really comfortable. I felt intense pressure and then my water broke on its own. I felt quite a bit of relief immediately following, though my pressure waves started to pick up in intensity after that.
I moved to the tub which was really relaxing. After only a few pressure waves, I felt the urge to push. I had my husband switch the audio to Pushing Baby Out which I listened to through one earbud. The waves were intense but manageable. I felt in control of my body and I felt safe with my team around me.
At 1:22pm, I gave birth to my ‘team green’ baby. My daughter (7) got to announce the sex of the baby, which ended up being a girl. The sister she always wanted. Sweet Hazel ![]()
I stayed in the tub for about 10 minutes. My husband cut the baby’s umbilical cord and then took her while I made my way to the bed. I enjoyed the golden hour with the baby on my chest, surrounded by my husband and daughter.
My daughter’s birth was calm, peaceful, safe, and most of all, redemptive. Hypnobabies helped me do the mental work for this birth, and I credit so much of the positive outcome to that positive and informed mindset. I also am so appreciative of my strong and wonderful birth team – even down to my daughter who got in the tub with me.
Thank you to Hypnobabies!”
