pregnant beauty flower compressedThis mom had a great beginning of her birth.
We went up to the room and they hooked me up to the machines to monitor the contractions and the baby's heart rate. I continued to relax through what were apparently pretty intense contractions. Evan said the nurse kept looking at me in amazement as the contractions spiked and I just sat there quietly, breathing. The doctor came in at 8:15 to check me and see if the contractions were productive. He popped his head up and said to me "Are you ready to have a baby today?? You're 8 centimeters dilated!" and I think I seriously got the chills I was so surprised. IT WAS HAPPENING. I had heard and read so many stories of women going through this hardest part of labor, as you get closer to 10cm. Somehow I was there and was doing just fine. At this point I thought "Wow, I'm seriously going to do this!!!" and was so excited that Hypnobabies actually was working for me. Even without any sleep the night before, I felt full of energy and also really relaxed. The doctor said he would come back in an hour and check again.

Then a surprise breech baby at 10cm created a scenario where she had to have a cesarean.  It was a shock, but she was able to use her Hypnobabies to help stay calm.

Read her story and see her beautiful pictures here.

Congratulations on your sweet baby girl!

My name is Veronica. I have 4 children. Each have come to me in a different way. We are blessed to have experienced adoption, a birth center water birth turned c-section, a hospital Hypnobabies VBAC, and a beautiful home water birth Hypnobabies VBAC. My youngest daughter was born at home in what I have said is our perfect birth. This is our story. …

I just wanted to quickly add my testimony of the effectiveness
of Hyponobabies to the thousands that have already been shared.

All day on Thrusday I'd been having 'soft' birthing waves. We went to
bed that night and about 12:30am I woke up in pain. I decided to sleep
through what I could because I was comfortable and warm. I woke up at
5:30am exhausted and jumped in the shower. After I got out my husband
went to get my Cds. I put in the Easy First Stage and I relaxed.

I remember really having to concentrate on relaxing through 4 waves. When
the CD ended 2 hours later (I think it played through more than once??)
I woke up and thought when am I suppose to go the hospital? I feel
great!

Then it hit me...HARD...I needed to go NOW!

We called the sitter and took one kid to school on the way. I showed up
to the hospital complete and delivered 15 minutes later.

I couldn't believe it! I have to admit I was a little skeptical of the
whole process. I'm a believer now!! I plan on using Hypnobabies with all my
births from now on. I just wish I discovered this 7 years ago!!

I sound like an infomercial, Haha!! But it really was that simple :-)

123 Headphones Mom 8 Head Back

At 34 weeks, I found out Baby M was breech, and to say I was stressed
is an understatement.  So I did some research, and tried to find all
of my options.  I tried elevating my hips (broke my ironing board!),
played music in my lower belly, and ordered the Turn Your Breech Baby
CD.  Then I called my acupuncturist.  Went to see her 3 times, and
while she got the baby to be very active, she never turned.  So then I
called the chiro and had him try the Webster technique last week, and
I was scheduled for another visit with him this past Monday.

I also had my 36 week OB appt that day, so when I went in, my OB said, …

You will love reading this fantastic hospital birth story! Our Hypno-Mom has a great nurse, uses the tub and her hubby is great at helping her with Hypnobabies cues and techniques. There are many excellent photos that show her using Hypnobabies, and she just loved it.

Maizy's Beautiful Hypnobabies Birth with great pictures.
We were talking and joking and enjoying our selves the whole time.  When a pressure wave would come, I'd just turn off my light switch, focus and then go back to the conversation.  There were a couple times when someone was talking to me when a pressure wave would come and I tried to talk to them rather then turning off my light switch.  Those couple times I felt my body start to tense up and as soon as I turned my light switch off, I'd relax and be much more comfortable.  It was amazing to me!  I also used my peace cue and that was very  effective and helpful in staying calm and relaxed.

There is nothing better than finding a wonderful review about Hypnobabies on a Mom's Blog!

At first, Aubrey thought:

I read a lot about Bradley and Brio, looked into Lamaze and honestly didn't give Hypnobabies a fighting chance at first. Why? Well, I thought it was super weird! I obviously didn't know anything about the method and had some serious misconceptions about hypnosis. For me, the word "hypnosis" was synonymous with someone clucking like a chicken on a stage or something like that...

Then she asked other moms for their input, changed her mind, used Hypnobabies and...

So, my review is 5 stars!!! Seriously, Hypnobabies is wonderful and made my pregnancy so much more enjoyable. I was able to take some time every single day to relax and I felt so much more prepared for this birth. During labor Hypnobabies helped me remain calm and focused. I had a very speedy, relatively easy birth that was almost exactly how I had envisioned it.

Hypnobabies is a very successful 6 week, 3-hours per week, complete childbirth education course that was adapted with permission from Gerald Kein’s “Painless Childbirth Program” techniques rather than using simple relaxation, breathing or guided imagery. This allows our Hypno-Moms to enjoy “eyes-open childbirth hypnosis”, easily remaining deeply in hypnosis while walking, talking and changing positions; being as mobile as they would like to be during childbirth. Hypnobabies is well-known for helping women to create much shorter, easier and more comfortable labors, making childbirth the joyful experience it was meant to be.

Expectant mothers use our Hypnobabies Workbook, CDs and hypnosis scripts to train their inner mind that contractions in labor will be felt mostly as pressure, tightening, pushing, pulling and normal baby movement sensations. Women are fully in tune with their babies during the birthing process, and as aware of everything around them as they’d like to be, easily able to communicate with their support team,  and completely in charge of their own birth experience.

Q) I’m expecting a baby and very excited about learning hypnosis for childbirth! Why should I learn Hypnobabies with a home study course? Isn’t it enough to just read a book and listen to a CD or two?
A) That depends on what your goals are for your baby’s birth. If you want a more relaxed birth, then simply reading a book and listening to a CD may be enough for you to feel satisfied with your birthing experience. If however, what you are looking for is a truly comfortable and much easier birth, you are going to have to prepare for it with dedication! Hypnobabies is very successful in this area, and has “homework” that needs to be done to achieve success.

Q) What is the difference between Hypnobabies and a regular hypno-birthing course?

Q) Should I take a Hypnobabies class or do the home study course?

A) Our Hypnobabies Home Study Course for Expectant Mothers is being used with great success by mothers all over the world right now, and it contains the same basic curriculum, hypnosis scripts and cues, but we suggest that anyone who is near a Hypnobabies Instructor take our Hypnobabies Class with a Certified Hypnobabies Instructor (HCHI certified). The benefits of attending a Hypnobabies Class include:

Pain-Free Childbirth?
By Kerry Tuschhoff, HCHI, CHt, CI

Hypnobabies: "Easier, More Comfortable Childbirth"

First and foremost, it is important to understand that although many of our Hypnobabies moms do experience pain-free births, not all of them do, and we do not promise or guarantee that will be the case. Hypnobabies is dedicated to helping each birthing mother have the *easiest, most comfortable birthing experience* that she can have. This is one of the first concepts our students learn, since our student workbook directly states the following:

You are about to embark upon a journey to learn how you, your Birth Partner and your baby can have a much easier, more comfortable and joyful childbirth experience. It will take dedication, planning and a willingness to be open to new concepts, and all will be well worth your effort and time.

At Hypnobabies, our motto is, “ENJOY your baby’s birth … in comfort, joy and love.” This is exactly what we work towards and what Hypnobabies was designed for, as you will see by the wording of each Hypnobabies script. It is important to remember that we cannot promise you a completely pain-free or drug-free birthing.

Although the majority of our Hypnobabies moms do have very comfortable births, some even pain-free, it is important for anyone using this course to understand that every birth experience is different, just as every pregnancy is different, you need to know and accept that your own will be the perfect one for you, no matter what path your birthing journey takes.

Here's an excerpt of an email i sent to my blessingways women, who were candle-lighting and meditating for me during my birthing time; in it, i describe what happened at little dylan's homebirth on january 3, 2008 and how he came into this world:

so, the day of january 3 began at 1 a.m. early morning when contractions/waves began and ended that late night with baby landing in john's arms. john caught the baby and also cut the cord. i'm not sure if it was the ragin' cajun' spicy shrimp dinner and fried hush puppies from dinner the night before that began labor or the storm. 'john, i think this is it,' i said, the time was 3 a.m. from 3 to 6 a.m., contractions/waves went from 20 minutes apart to 4 minutes apart, which was so sudden that …

Our cleaning lady didn’t show on Thursday – not sure why.  So, my house was a bit of a mess.  I was feeling kind of crampy and tired on Friday, so I stayed home from work.  Nesting kicked in full force – I cleaned the kitchen.  Including the revolving spice rack and the cabinet doors.

Later that evening, pressure waves started and were 10-12 minutes apart.  They weren’t coming any closer together, so I went to bed and tried to get some sleep, which didn’t really happen.

At 7am on Saturday, I got up.  Timed pressure waves again and they were 5-7 minutes apart.  I ate breakfast, made Morgan some french toast and called my doula.  Brian called his mom to come take Morgan.  I was initially feeling like the Hypnobabies program wasn’t working, until I talked to Jean (my doula) and she remarked how calm I sounded.

She showed up about an hour after I called her (9:30am or so).  We labored at home until waves were 2-3 minutes apart – 11:30am.  They never increased in intensity – I felt them as pressure/tightening sensations. …

My name is Carole Thorpe. I have been active in the natural childbirth community for over 35 years. I assisted hundreds of women in childbirth long before we were known as doulas. I was a birth assistant to an MD/OB, who owned and operated a birthing center, and who also “caught” babies in couples homes.

I taught many hundreds of his patients preparation for natural childbirth classes. I taught them the anatomy and physiology of late pregnancy and the birthing process. I also taught them how to manage or cope with any discomfort during their birthings by using breathing techniques similar to those taught by both Bradley and Lamaze, and taught their birth partners to employ touch or verbal relaxation cues, and I taught moms how to create their own guided imagery scenarios to be read to them during their birthings in order to give them mental respite from their contractions, and how to use external focal points to distract moms and diminish any perceptions of discomfort.

On Tuesday, May 13th, I went for my 41 week check-up. 20 minutes of fetal monitoring showed the baby was doing very well, and that I was aving some pws (I had no idea). I had used the 20 min to get into hypnosis, since I figured the doc would want to do an internal exam. I was right, but she mentioned the “i” word even before checking me. At this hospital, they like to induce at 41 weeks and 4 or 5 days. But since that was a weekend, she wanted me to come in on Friday if the baby hadn’t been born yet. Her internal exam determined that my cervix was dilated 1/2cm and “wasn’t favorable,” though the baby’s head was far down.

Now I should mention that doctors here (Estonia, in northern Europe) really only deal with high-risk and overdue situations. I had only been seeing my midwife until this point, and my pregnancy had gone extremely smoothly. Naturally, I wanted to avoid inducing if at all possible. I asked the doctor to write down the name of the tablets (Cytotec) they use for inducing, and I’m so glad I did. I looked it up first thing once I got home from the appointment and decided that if they did induce me, it would NOT be with Cytotec. Also, the idea that I’d induce on Friday so they could have a nice weekend is crazy.

 Vanessa’s Story

I had a mostly easy and uneventful pregnancy.  Even the morning sickness was almost nonexistent, except for a general icky feeling in the early evenings for the first few weeks.  I was incredibly tired and hungry throughout the pregnancy, and during the last 2 to 3 weeks I was nearing exhaustion.  It was impossible to find a comfortable position and I was unable to sleep.  My mental and emotional states were suffering in those last couple of weeks.  I arranged to start my maternity leave from work a week before my due date in hopes of having time at home to relax.

About half way through the pregnancy I started practicing Hypnobabies, a self-hypnosis program for a comfortable childbirth. I had decided I wanted to have a natural drug free birth and put my faith in 6 CDs with suggestions to help me relax through labor and experience childbirth as an easy and painless event.  Listening to a CD every night was a great way to relax and it also gave me confidence in my pregnancy and my body’s ability to birth a baby.

We loved this blog post by Kathy Valeii about newborn procedures.
One of the more infuriating aspects of Woman as Patient are the events that tend to unfold  during and immediately following the birth.  Just as during labor, the power dynamic is established early on, so too, is the establishment of “possession” of and entitlement to the newborn immediately following the birth.

I’ve explored in some detail in a prior post the power struggle that takes place during the birth.  Here, I’ll focus on the events immediately following the birth, and how they serve to maintain woman as patient, thereby diminishing her confidence in her own intuition as a mother.
