Sarah’s Truly Joyful Hypnobabies Waterbirth

“I was so excited to almost hold my baby in my arms. I was able to laugh and talk all the way through the pushing phase. I didn’t have any tearing, so I was able to leave the hospital within a few hours and was home by lunchtime. It truly was a joyful birth, and pregnancy”

At exactly 41 weeks pregnant, at 12:30 am, my water broke in my sleep. I went to bed the night of the 19th with no pressure waves (Hypnobabies word for contractions), or any indication that anything was about to happen (I didn’t have a cervix check the whole pregnancy). I woke up to a popping sensation, I ran to the bathroom and fluid gushed out as I ran. I called my husband to get me a maternity pad so that I could get off the toilet. He called the midwives at the hospital to tell them my water had broken, they asked to speak to me. They asked me if I’d had any pressure waves, I hadn’t so they said to go back to sleep.

We went back to sleep for about half an hour and then I woke up to pressure waves. They started at 5 minutes apart, I started listening to Your Birthing Time Begins (Hypnobabies reminder of all of the tools, tracks, and techniques to use during birthing), and Birthing Day Affirmations. I couldn’t stay in bed any longer because I was leaking so much fluid, so I set up a mattress in the hallway outside the bathroom and lay there and listened to my tracks.

Something I noticed was that every hour did only seem like a few minutes, as the tracks say. I lost track of my pressure waves as I didn’t feel like counting, just relaxing. I eventually felt like I needed more support, so I woke up my mom who was staying over. She said my pressure waves were 2 mins apart. She picked up that every time I said Peeeeeeace (Hypnobabies cue for instant physical comfort) I was having a pressure wave. She woke up my husband, he called the hospital again and told them my status, they said to come in, but that unfortunately the birthing pools were all occupied. I chose to wait it out in my own bathtub until they had one available.

After a while, my husband called back and the midwives said a pool had just been vacated but needed to be cleaned. We got into the car, I started listening to Easy First Stage (Hypnobabies main birthing day track), light switch in the center (Hypnobabies technique to be in hypnosis with eyes open). I realized later that I was in transformation (Hypnobabies word for transition) in the car ride over to the hospital. It was not nice to have to sit up on a seat, all I wanted to do was get back onto my hands and knees.

We got to the hospital at 5 am. As soon as we arrived I kicked off my shoes, took off my dress and announced that I was ready to push. My husband put the Pushing Baby Out track (Hypnobabies track just for pushing) on the speaker. The midwife did a quick cervix check, I was at a 10 and complete. They were still filling up the tub so I just stayed on all fours on the bed. The pushing sensation started off gently, and gradually became stronger. I pushed for an hour and a half, it might sound like a long time, but I think it’s exactly what my body needed in order to keep my pelvic floor undamaged.

The Pushing Baby Out track is amazing, it said the right things just as I needed to hear them. I found myself repeating every line out loud to myself, and loudly vocalizing the aaaaah sound. Our baby was born at 6:32 am, with her cord wrapped tightly around her neck twice, but the midwives unwound it very quickly and without a fuss. I pulled her up onto my chest, it was pure bliss, and just how I visualized her birth. I was so excited to almost hold my baby in my arms. I was able to laugh and talk all the way through the pushing phase. I didn’t have any tearing, so I was able to leave the hospital within a few hours and was home by lunchtime. It truly was a joyful birth and pregnancy. I credit that to listening to the pregnancy affirmations every day. We decided to call our daughter Joy, to remind us every day of why we decided to have her, and how she makes us feel. Thank you Hypnobabies for making this beautiful birth possible for me and my daughter.
