Rachel’s Hypnobabies Hospital Birth Just in Time for Mother’s Day

“The nurses had made it very soothing and has even put up twinkle lights over the tub, which I had not expected at all. It was beautiful. I changed from the tub to the bed a number of times, and within about four hours my doctor told me that I could start pushing.”

I will preface my story by saying that at the time she decided to come out, I was 41 weeks and 2 days pregnant. I was very convinced that I would be the first person to be pregnant forever. My doctor had talked about a possible medical induction on Wednesday that week, and so at my appointment on Monday I was going to ask her to strip my membranes. Luckily, baby did not allow me to make it to my appointment!

I started having pressure waves at about 3 AM on Monday morning. I remember waking up and thinking, “Wow, my back really hurts. I must have overdone it on the yoga ball yesterday” and going back to sleep. I woke again at about 7 and began going about my day. At around 10, the feeling in my back started getting a little stronger. Being a first-time mom, I had no idea what a pressure wave might feel like, but I thought and hoped and prayed that this was the day I would meet my daughter.

I texted my doula, Danielle, who lives about an hour away and told her what was happening. She said to keep her updated. In the next few hours, I listened to many of the birthing day tracks, bounced on my yoga ball, and ate healthy and nourishing foods and drank plenty of water. By around four, I knew that things were picking up a bit, and Danielle decided to make the journey to my house.
We went for a walk and did various things like using the rebozo, trying to get baby to move down further. We did the belly tuck which seemed to work wonders. I also laid in the bath for some time. At 9, we decided to go to the hospital.

After two hours there, we were told that I hadn’t made any progress and were given the option to either stay in the very small triage room for two more hours or go home and try to sleep. At this point, I felt a bit defeated. I felt as if I hadn’t stayed home long enough. So, lugging all of our supplies out of the hospital, we went back to my house. We tried to get some sleep, but things were getting very intense for me. I was shaking and sweating and was trying to listen to my deepening track, but I had to keep moving around. I kept accidentally overriding my light switch at this time, which I felt kind of scared about. I woke up Danielle and told her, “I’m not doing very well. I don’t know if I can do this without medicine.” She told me, “you ARE doing this. You can do this.” And we got in the car again. Now, I didn’t know it, but at this time I was going from 3 cm all the way to 7 cm in the span of about an hour. The intense emotions that I was feeling were the result of this huge change my body was making.

This time, we were given a birthing room right away. The nurses had made it very soothing and has even put up twinkle lights over the tub, which I had not expected at all. It was beautiful. I changed from the tub to the bed a number of times, and within about four hours my doctor told me that I could start pushing. We turned on the Pushing Your Baby Out track and I began to try to push. For about an hour, this was not productive. I had been up for over 24 hours at this point and was losing energy fast. Luckily, my wonderful doula and the awesome nurses guided me gently through the process. Danielle put on Baby Come Out, which has become a favorite of mine in the weeks prior as I tried everything to avoid that medical induction.

When baby was finally ready and with listening to this track, I felt a huge shift. I was able to push between pressure waves and felt that what my body was doing was finally getting baby out. I will never forget the moment when the nurse told me to reach down and feel her soft, wet head. That was so relieving. I think until that moment, I hadn’t really fully believed that there was even a baby in there! I pushed my daughter out in a couple more pushes and they put her on my tummy. She was here, whole and beautiful as can be. I have never felt such joy and love before this day. Hypnobabies gave me the beautiful, natural birth that I had dreamed of. Thank you Hypnobabies for this wonderful gift.
