Rachelle’s Easy, Pain-Free Hypnobabies Home Birth

“She (my midwife) arrived at 1:30 am and I allowed her to check my cervix. I was fully expecting her to say I was dilated to a 3 (I was still feeling so comfortable and relaxed *Thank you, Hypnobabies! *) but she said I was dilated to an 8!”

In preparation for my second Hypnobabies birth, I wanted to write out my first Hypnobabies experience in hopes to confirm to myself that I CAN do this again and it CAN be another enjoyable, relaxing, pain-free birth.

My second child was my first home birth and first Hypnobabies birth. I started the program at 32 weeks and had him at 42 weeks exactly. Every day I would visualize exactly how I wanted the birth to happen. One of my biggest desires was that my water wouldn’t break until the very end and I would visualize that daily for those 10 weeks.

I am a naturally negative thinker so doing Hypnobabies was extremely helpful for me. It forced me to put away all of my negative thoughts and fears and only focus on the positive. I was extremely vigilant about recognizing when negative thoughts were creeping in and I was quick to make them go away. Starting on Monday, June 19th, I went into my early “birthing time” (Hypnobabies word for labor) but was able to walk and talk through the pressure waves (Hypnobabies word for contractions) and was completely comfortable. I was listening to Easy First Stage (Hypnobabies main birthing day track) and Deepening Your Hypnosis (Hypnobabies track that deepens the level of hypnosis) throughout my birthing time.  The Release cue really helped me enter hypnosis quickly.

The pressure waves continued into Tuesday and by Tuesday night at 11:30 pm I was in the bathtub listening to my hypnosis tracks and feeling completely relaxed but I started shaking uncontrollably between pressure waves. I still felt perfectly fine; I was just shaking in between. I texted my midwife at 12:45 am on Wednesday morning and let her know that my pressure waves were still not consistent (I would sometimes have as much as 20 minutes in between them) but I was shaking in between. She decided to come right over. She arrived at 1:30 am and I allowed her to check my cervix. I was fully expecting her to say I was dilated to a 3 (I was still feeling so comfortable and relaxed *Thank you, Hypnobabies! *) but she said I was dilated to an 8!

I couldn’t believe it! The first picture was taken about 10 minutes after she told me that. (Notice I’m still smiling!) Shortly after that, the pressure waves started getting more intense and closer together. I asked my midwife, “So is this what they call transformation?” (Hypnobabies word for transition) She said, “Yes, except you’re still smiling!” I was in a birthing tub for a few hours and then decided I wanted to move to the bed.

Shortly after that I started pushing and 45 minutes later, my 9 lb 2 oz baby boy was born at 4:45 am … in the amniotic sac! The midwife broke the sac and handed my baby over to me. He cried enough to let us know he was alive but was very content and quiet after that. I am so grateful for Hypnobabies and truly believe it is the reason my birth was so easy, comfortable, and pain-free!

I am excited to welcome another little baby boy into this world using Hypnobabies again and I am looking forward to what this birth will bring! Photos: 1) Me in the birthing tub 10 minutes after my midwife told me I was dilated to an 8! 2) A photo of our little family taken just 1 hour after our baby boy was born!  I truly believe he was so happy and calm because he had such a calm, easy birthing experience!
