Let's say you have a friend who has hired a personal trainer/fitness or health coach because they want to make certain changes; whether it's fitting into a certain outfit, getting to a particular dress size, weight, fitness level determined by their personal goal. The coach tells them they can get the results they seek by a certain date IF they follow a specific regimen that includes exercising 4 days a week, cutting out sugar completely and not eating past 8pm. IF they do this, they will get where they want to be.

Now, let's say you talk to your friend later and ask how it's going and they respond with "well, I'm certainly not where I was told I would be" so you ask them how their practice is going and they tell you that because they've been so busy they've only been able to work out once or twice a week max and hectic schedules mean that they just can't eat before 8:30pm 3-4 nights a week and since life has been so busy they've really needed the sugar to keep going "but I've definitely cut down and hey, at least I'm eating before 8pm a few days a week and working out more than I used to right?" ... or something to that effect.

And then I ask my students "would you be surprised they weren't getting the results?" They always say "no" and I say "Exactly." And then I repeat "with hypnosis, as much effort you put in directly relates to how much compensation you will reap. I WILL be asking you every week to share how your practice is going and I welcome you to contact me anytime if there are any challenges so that we can get you where you NEED to be. We are all busy these days, but I KNOW you'll find once you get into a routine you'll enjoy practicing so much that many of my students contact me AFTER their babies come looking to continue using hypnosis in their everyday life."

Dear Hypnobabies,
I just want to say thank you. I am 36 weeks pregnant and have been doing your course ever since I was 20 weeks. Even though my birthing time is still weeks away, I couldn’t have gotten this far without you.
When I first found out we were pregnant I cried with tears of joy… Not long after I began crying tears of fear. I had started researching pregnancy and childbirth and came across blog after blog, link after link of horrible experiences and stories. I was terrified. It didn’t help that I work with a staff full of women who have all had children and (bless their hearts) thought it would be a good idea to share their birthing stories with me. Words like epidural and c-section seemed to be the most common. At least that’s what stuck in my head. So I started searching for positive birth experiences and even those were tough to find. Until, I found a link to hypnobabies. After reading one women’s birthing story about it being comfortable, I was sold. I purchased the course and started studying right away. I did each section for 2 weeks instead of 1 since I started so early. I am so thankful I started when I did.
Creating my bubble of peace was the most important thing I could have done for my pregnancy. I find the worst part of pregnancy is not the “morning sickness” or being “uncomfortable” (I hate always being asked if I’m uncomfortable… I’m not. If anything it’s just awkward at times), but people’s comments. The stories and the comments are the hardest for me and my bubble of peace has helped me so much. I have continued to stay active while pregnant and I have actually had people express their concern about me losing my baby (when I was 28 weeks). I have also had people go into detail about their birthing day without being asked. And it isn’t the type of birthing story I want to hear. But I have a hard time saying how I feel, so instead I just let it bounce off my bubble and it actually helps strengthen it. These people have made my bubble so strong that I am determined to have the birth I want. And if I don’t, then at least I know I did everything possible to try.
Hypnobabies also helped me choose the right type of care I needed during my pregnancy. I was seeing an OB until I started my course, which is when I realized I needed to switch my care. When I spoke to my doctor about my birth plan, she wasn’t on board for most of my wishes. Saying that it wasn’t part of their protocol, or that she wasn’t comfortable with me birthing in that position, she also told me that she would definitely ask me if I needed anything for the pain, it’s just part of her routine. I feel like if I am in that much pain, I will ask for it… no? I don’t need to be reminded; I know that those options are there. I also told her about my prenatal course, Hypnobabies, and she said it seemed “weird”.
I went online again (I’ve never used google so much in my life) and found the phone number to my local midwife group. I was put on a list since I had called late in my pregnancy but was able to get seen and now I have a wonderful midwife who fully understands and supports my plan. I am not naive, I know that my birth plan may not go the way I want, but I want someone to support my wishes and to try.
I will write about my birth experience but I just wanted to let you know that Hypnobabies works. Regardless of what my birthing experience ends up like, it helped me get to the day with confidence. I was terrified of this day and now I couldn’t be more excited. I am so interested to go through this amazing process of bringing a tiny little human being into the world. I look forward to my pressure waves and birthing day. Our bodies were made to do this.

Thank you Hypnobabies.

Sincerely,
Michelle Kobzik, a pregnant woman excited for birth

Two of our Hypnobabies moms shared with us on our Mom's Forum how they used their Hypnobabies techniques and cues to eliminate pelvic and hip pain:

Marilyn wrote: "I have been having a lot of pelvic and hip pain on my left side. My chiropractor said it is probably symphysis pubic dysfunction and it will probably bother me until she's born.

I have been using Hypnobabies to help me deal with the discomfort and it has been a life saver! Especially at night when I'm trying to sleep. I had some doubts about how well Hypnobabies would really work once I was in labor since I'm not in any pain when I practice.

Now I know how well it works and I have no doubts that I can have a completely comfortable delivery."

Emily wrote: "Same here! I've been wondering if the Hypnobabies techniques were working. Then baby started to drop a few days ago making sharp stabbing "pains" in my pelvis. I could not stand or move. Then my hubbs said go lay down and listen to your Hypnobabies CDs. I listened to two while my 2 yr old was napping an literally everything went away!!   Very encouraging for my upcoming birth! I'm so excited for the big day!!"

One of our Hypno-Doulas, Michelle, wrote us about how she was auditing a Hypnobabies class as a doula and, without even being a Hypnobabies student, she was able to use Hypnoobabies "tools" very sccessfully! Our moms can use their tools for many physical and emotional issues as well, during pregnancy and after their babies are born.

My name is Michelle and I took undergraduate courses in hypnosis (slept through most of them, truth be told! :/ ) but never really connected with hypnosis until auditing a Hypnobabies course to complete my DONA birth doula requirements. I found after the first two classes, I was able to turn my Hypnobabies "light switch" to "off" and get total relief from period cramps. :) :) :) After that I was hooked!

I’ve been studying Hypnobabies since 20 weeks (I’m 37 weeks now) and finally had a chance to try out my mad hypnosis skillz today. I have a complete phobia of needles, like paralyzing, fainting bad. My midwife wanted to do a blood draw last week and I said no, let’s wait a week and I’ll come prepped for it.

This morning I did a Hypnobabies "Fear Release" hypnosis session but was still feeling nervous. So I get there today, go and lay down before the appointment and listen to one of my scripts on iPod. I told DH to have them draw the blood as quickly as they could without disturbing me while I was in hypnosis and relaxed. So I’m laying there and I feel her put on the band and wipe with alcohol and then a tickle on my arm like she brushed it with her finger. All of a sudden the band is off and I’m like *what the heck, she missed the vein!!!*.

So I open my eyes and she says “All done, you did great!”. OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously!!!!!

For moms with nausea, here is a testimonial from a mom on the Hypnobabies Moms Forum.

I did buy this early in my pregnancy and it worked GREAT. I still have the skills…and I’ve had my baby already. I’d definitely use it again! It worked well after listening only once or twice. I continued to listen every few days when nausea was the strongest, then just tapered off and used the skills it taught.

Awesome! The success I had with it was part of what strengthened my confidence in the Hypnobabies program.

Because of some pretty major intestinal problems, I had to have a colonoscopy done and some bleeding in my large intestine cauterized on Monday. Generally, these procedures are done with substantial sedation and pain medication, but I’m 26 weeks pregnant and didn’t want to put those drugs into my baby.

So… against medical advice, I had the procedure done without medication. They let me listen to my Hypnobabies track (I picked “special place”) for 30 minutes prior, and keep my iPod on during the procedure.

While I can’t say it was pain-free, I can say that I made it through, and I’m very proud of myself.  I’ve only been doing Hypnobabies for 3 weeks, so I didn’t have all the “ammo”, yet the medical staff was amazed that I was able to handle it!  It was about as un-natural a procedure as I can imagine, but Hypnobabies still kept me relaxed, in control, and drug-free.

I just wanted to say THANK YOU for helping me keep my baby drug-free in the womb – I can’t wait to see how this works during a healthy, natural birth.

Since our moms ask for this information all the time in classes, I am sharing how I organized and loaded the Hypnobabies CD tracks into my iPOD as a backup for my hypno-doula clients:

I loaded most of the titles as a separate playlist or album, so that they didn't automatically play the next title when one ended, and I labeled each track with the same 'artist'/Kerry Tuschhoff, and the same 'genre'/Hypnobabies so that they would sort into a Hypnobabies only album/play list.

The only exception to that is the Relaxation Music CD...I loaded all three tracks on one playlist so that they will play one after the other continuously, and I don't have to restart the music so often when I am playing it aloud in the room.

This list is in the order that moms typically listen to their CDs in their birthing times:

Early birthing time???...or for practice, if mom's not even sure 'this is it' yet...
"Relaxation Music"...all 3 tracks in one playlist to play continuously, while using the finger-drop
"Birthing Day Affirmations"...also very early on while using the finger-drop
"Special Place"...to reinforce this in your mind early in your birthing time
"Easy, Comfortable Childbirth"...for the same reason
If you'd like, you could also load your...
"Visualize/Create Your Hypnobabies Birth" (the last Hypnobabies class birth partner's script) some moms like to listen to this one during their early birthing time).

Active First Stage... moms KNOW they're having the baby TODAY...
"Fear Release/Fear Clearing"...to get rid of any 'what ifs' about this baby's birthing, and to reinforce your Bubble of Peace
"Deepening"...to deepen your ability to enter hypnosis using your finger-drop and 'Release' cue, and to reinforce your 'Peace' cue for instant physical comfort.

When moms begin to know that they need a little something different or more to listen to (to deepen their relaxation, their hypnosis and to create more powerful anesthesia as a result, and for the car ride...
"Easy First Stage" (from the "Birth Guide" CD)

As soon as moms begin to feel any pushy pressure/second stage...this track plays out loud in the room...
"Pushing Baby Out" (also from the "Birth Guide" CD)

I want to tell you about how Tanya's story inspired me.

I found out I was pregnant very early (4 weeks). That same week I had a dentist's appointment for a filling, cleaning and xrays. I told the dentist I thought I might be pregnant and he said we would just do the cleaning since the anesthesia is a vasoconstrictor and is not a good idea for women in their first trimester. So I got the cleaning and he told me I could come back after the first trimester.

I immediately got my hands on Hypnobabies Self-study course (8 weeks) and began practicing. I never thought at the time it would have anything to do with my impending filling. When, I studied the part about creating anesthesia however I thought there maybe a way around this whole filling and a narcotic business.
Then, I was lucky enough to read Tanya's story about her mole biopsy while nursing and the way she used her Hypnobabies technique. Then, I watched the other links Sheridan had shared about the woman getting dental implants sans anesthesia with hypnosis and I knew I could do it.
Now don't get me wrong; I questioned whether I could do it. What if it didn't work? What if I felt pain? Would it be the same for my birth?
So I set up my dental appointment at 16 weeks (today) and I let the assistant know that I would not be using and shots and I had a technique for discomfort. She told me they had an anesthesia for pregnant women, but I told her I didn't want anything except for the insert used to hold people's mouths open during procedures when the patient was unconscious. She raised her eyebrows, but said she would let the dentist know. Fortunately the dentist and I are long time friends and he said it would be no problem.

I asked him to give me a minute to put myself under- "this is it," I thought. During the procedure the assistant said "You're doing great Tonya, they are going to love you in the delivery room!" The dentist responded "Yeah, you will have to come back and teach this to all our patients!"
Within what seemed like two minutes they were done. The dentist asked if I was ok and I said "Oh yeah-didn't feel a thing!" (I absolutely meant it-well I felt like I had to pee because that is just a constant lately!) He said he had gotten some fillings done before with out anesthesia but nothing like that and not without a flinch like I had just done. He said I was AMAZING!

I told him it was Hypnobabies and I would send him the links on the dental procedures with hypnosis. YEA HYPNOBABIES! Now I won't know for quite some time how my birth will turn out but I definitely feel more confident than ever!

Comment by Sheridan - Hypnobabies is meant for preparing for birth.  Not all moms would be able to do this (convert what she was learning for birth and use it for dentistry), but how awesome that she did!

I of course get to see this first hand with the moms I work with.

It was wonderful to see an article which discussed all the benefits.

Here are some highlights.

Moms that use hypnosis

  • use less drugs during birth

  • are more comfortable during birth

  • have shorter labors

  • less medical interventions

  • less depression and anxiety after birth

Hypnobabies is great for moms on so many levels!

A mom from the Yahoo Group posted this a few days ago and gave me permission to share.

I posted a few days ago that I ended up in preterm labor on
Wednesday. I received a shot of terbutaline and was ordered to take
it easy. Well, today my contractions got really hard and frequent and
were not stopping no matter what. I quickly got online and
downloaded "Baby Stay In." I took it with me to the hospital,
listening to it a bit on the way. Then I had to stop listening to
deal with admissions, nurses, etc.

I received another shot of terbutaline upon arrival, and though it
slowed things down a bit, it didn't completely stop the contractions.
Next, they tried procardia. Again, the contractions continued and the
baby wasn't doing great either. I told my husband that I was going to
put on my headphones and listen to Baby Stay In, and that he needed to deal with the nurse interactions for the next 30 minutes. My eyes were closed, so I didn't see the monitor, but my husband said, within a few minutes of starting the track, my contractions COMPLETELY STOPPED (after 4 hours of contracting!). At the end of the 30 minutes, I looked at the monitor and saw only a flat line where the contractions used to be. I had one more contraction right after
coming out of hypnosis, but then nothing.

The nurse was amazed at the effectiveness. My husband had explained Hypnobabies to her while I was listening, and when I finished, she came in and said, "Your relaxation stuff really works well!" I was discharged within 15 minutes.

This experience has given me so much confidence that Hypnobabies is going to give me the wonderful birth that I want! I am so glad I found this incredible program!!

This is such a relief. I have diverticulosis. If you're not familiar with it, I have polyps along my intestine and it sometimes causes very
painful cramping, and it especially gets worse mid-pregnancy (for me).
It's really, really, bad, agonizing pain during cramping and it usually
lasts about an hour.

Well, for the past week, I've had it about 5 times. I've done both the
peace cue and other times turned off my lightswitch, and it worked! I
am so happy about this, it's such a difficult thing to deal with. This
morning I was in the grocery store with my husband and I felt it coming on, and the peace cue worked for me.

Thank you Hypnobabies!!!

Last time I had my blood drawn I fainted and it took me 10 minutes to come around fully. This time I stood up and said "wow, that was it?" and walked into her exam room without batting an eye!!!

I am so jazzed to use this for birth now. Even if I just get to use hypnosis for blood draws for the rest of my life it would be totally worth it but now I completely believe it is going to be awesome for my birth and I can't wait to share it with everyone.
