Nicole’s Hypnobabies Hospital Birth with Covid-19

“After about 4 of those waves, we drove to the hospital. I listened to my Easy First Stage track (Hypnobabies main birthing day track) on the way and once we got there, my husband was allowed to stay with me, and I barely made it onto the bed before my baby insisted on coming right out in a couple pushes; I couldn’t slow it down which surprised me .”

Meet Naya Mae, my third baby and first hypno-baby- born on New Year’s Day! I’m sharing my story because I really appreciated reading others’ stories.

I used the Hypnobabies home study materials starting around 35 weeks. I wondered if I started too late and didn’t practice enough, but in my case it worked out great.

I tested positive for Covid-19 at 38 weeks, despite having been very cautious my entire pregnancy. It threw me for a loop as my parents had just arrived to help and the whole family got it at varying start times (based on everyone’s testing). Luckily, we are all ok now, and it looks like baby is too, but while having mild Covid symptoms I did need to do a Fear-Clearing (Hypnobabies track to release fear) session or two, and a Change-of-Plans script (Hypnobabies script for a change in birth plan) like someone in the Support Group had suggested. Those completely calmed me.

Instead of going to the natural birthing center, my husband and I would be going to the hospital instead where staff would wear full PPE and require us to isolate. Understanding what the birthing situation would be as a COVID-19+ patient was hard to get answers for. Even when driving to the hospital for my birthing time (Hypnobabies term for labor), my midwife was telling me to be ready for the unexpected like not having my husband with me, because he was considered potentially contagious while I had just passed my 10-day mark of being contagious. By that point I was rolling with whatever came our way.

I started having pressure waves (Hypnobabies term for contractions) at 4 am on (New Year’s Eve) my guess date (Hypnobabies term for due date) and spent my early birthing time at home the whole day with not much progress (except for the waves speeding up for a bit after some dancing with the kids). Later in the night I wondered if I should be trying harder to move things along because listening to my tracks would help me relax but also seemed to slow things down. Eventually around 3 am the pressure waves changed from every 10-20 minutes to every 3-4 minutes and were much stronger. It really helped that my husband provided counter-pressure and gave cue words to help me relax.

After about 4 of those waves, we drove to the hospital. I listened to my Easy First Stage track (Hypnobabies main birthing day track) on the way and once we got there, my husband was allowed to stay with me, and I barely made it onto the bed before my baby insisted on coming right out in a couple pushes; I couldn’t slow it down which surprised me . The midwife barely got there in time to catch her haha. Because I didn’t push for long, wearing a mask wasn’t even noticeable to me (which I’d worried a little about).

The nurses and my midwife had no idea how close I was, and I attribute that to how Hypnobabies helped me stay relaxed! I also didn’t tear; I thought that was amazing! I couldn’t have asked for a better experience .
