Had my second son and first hypno-baby last night (our guess date) at 9 pm! Not only was I able to use my Hypnobabies tools, but I was able to birth Khai naturally at our birthing center with no problems!

I’d been having prodromal for three weeks, but in the last week, it really picked up. Monday, I went in to see my doctor, because I’d been losing so much of my mucus plug/bloody show, I was genuinely worried. They did a nonstress test and said baby was great, I was dilated to 4cm, and expected to see me soon for my birthing time (Hypnobabies term for labor). I didn’t want to get my hopes up, because prodromal really messed with my confidence and emotions. That night, my waves (Hypnobabies term for contractions) kicked in at 1 am. I hesitated to tell anyone, but by 2:30, I did reach out to my doula. She told me to rest, so I did my best!

By 5:30 am, I told my husband he needed to go ahead and get up. We have a farm, and I wanted to make sure our animals were all tended to in case we needed to leave fast. I stayed home and worked through my waves in bed mostly. My mother-in-law took care of our 2.5-year-old, which allowed me time to focus. By 11, I tried to make myself some food and realized we just needed to head in, because my birthing time (Hypnobabies term for labor) had officially started. I began listening to Easy First Stage (Hypnobabies main birthing time track) for the car ride in.

By the time we got to triage, I’d dilated between 5-6cm, which was enough to be admitted into the birthing center at our hospital. From that point on, I spent most of my time in the birthing tub. I literally listened to Easy First Stage for my ENTIRE birthing time. I’d occasionally get out to use the restroom, work on a birthing ball or other birthing tool. I had my husband and my doula reciting all my Hypnobabies cues and lines, even though I had my headphones on. I could occasionally hear them, and knowing they were committed beside me helped things immensely.

By about 7:30 pm, I had a midwife break my water, because my body wasn’t wanting to dilate past 7/8. We knew it would speed things up, and we had a good experience with this with my first son, so we all collectively agreed. Sure enough, things progressed very fast. I still remained listening to my track on repeat the entire time and was in the ZONE. I kept telling myself I was a warrior, and I was very much safe. I found it best to rock on my hands and knees at the very end, and I could feel my baby moving down into my birth canal. I wasn’t entirely sure when I was in transformation (Hypnobabies term for transition) or not, because a couple of times felt like it, but to my surprise, it was time to push!

My husband tried to rush and put on the Pushing Baby Out track (Hypnobabies track for pushing), but he couldn’t get the speaker to connect, so he played it out loud on his phone. To be honest, I hardly heard it, but I didn’t need it. My team was using all the affirmations I needed! Pushing lasted less than ten minutes, and I found it easiest to do it on my side and back for leverage. Pushing felt right for me. I was able to help pull my baby out and onto my chest where we stayed for literally hours after. Khai River ended up weighing 8 lbs 3oz. I didn’t have any tears or need any stitching at all!

I chose Hypnobabies for this birth, because I felt my first birth was difficult and long (36 hours) but it didn’t have to be that way. With this birth, I felt like this better equipped me with the right tools to relax enough to be vulnerable to the experience. While I felt like I was in the zone, I was very much present. Our birthing time lasted 15 hours total.

VERY thankful for the experience we had. We’ve reflected on it all day, and I keep saying this birth is my redemption birth. I felt powerful, strong, and remained in control. It was absolutely PERFECT!
