I welcomed my baby boy (2nd child) and first Hypno-baby a week ago! Going through the online home study course was amazing and I looked forward to practicing my hypnosis every day. It was like I got a nap every day without feeling hazy or groggy after “waking up”!

Why I chose Hypnobabies:

Newborn Baby wrapped in white blanketWith my first birth, I wanted a natural hospital birth and my OB suggested I read a hypnobirthing book so I could learn some tools for birthing time (Hypnobabies term for labor). I was so impressed by the concept, but I never knew how to practice what I read or really understand what in the world I was supposed to do except be aware of my breathing during waves (Hypnobabies term for contractions).

Long story short, I went into my birthing time at the hospital very uncomfortable and immediately got out of the headspace I worked so hard to create at home because of the cascade of interventions that they pushed on me that I had hoped not to do. (I didn’t feel that I had a voice in the moment and that I had to be a compliant patient.) Although my baby was born perfectly according to changed plans with no complications, I suffered a very hard recovery due to the injuries I received and a lot of emotional disappointment in myself for almost 2 years.

I couldn’t talk about her birth most times without crying. And if you know me, I’m not really a crier, so that experience was a bit traumatizing for me. But I knew I needed to move forward with faith that I could have a redemptive and healing birth next time. I determined in my heart that I’d do it differently next time. I came across Hypnobabies and I knew it was exactly what I needed to have *real* tools and structured practice of those tools leading up to birth!

I am proud to say that I had a wonderful birthing time with my son last week. For me, hypnosis wasn’t an absence of some discomfort or sensations, but having a stream of positive thoughts running through my head that I was safe, my body was doing the right things, that I was in control, and knowing what to expect from my body at each stage – which in turn made my birthing time very comfortable! Even though some moments were intense, I look back on it and think “that was all??”

I was able to take care of my toddler in center switch up until waves came every 2-3 minutes before I asked my husband to take over her care. This was so awesome, but also a little nerve wracking because I almost had a car baby! I just didn’t think it was that “bad” and that I still had plenty of time! We arrived at the birth center just in time for me to hop in the water tub and then move to the bed for the final pushes. My husband was amazing and started to play “Pushing Baby Out” (Hypnobabies track just for pushing) out loud and asked if that’s what I wanted, to which I quickly said no thank you because I enjoyed hearing what my midwives were telling me while I worked with my Peace cue (Hypnobabies cue for instant physical comfort) and visualizing bright orange hypno-anesthesia.

My hypnosis didn’t go according to textbook, but like so many of the suggestions say: my birth was unique unto its own and I chose to do what felt right in the moment. And I feel at peace with how it played out. I learned that you can’t really use hypnosis wrong as long as you continually choose to use it.

Did I feel hypno-anesthesia physically numbing my body? No. (Unless it was taking some of the edge off and I wasn’t aware … this is my first birth to feel all the sensations from beginning to end.) But I did find a lot of emotional comfort and needed focus by directing it where I wanted.

Did I feel like I went as deeply into hypnosis like in my practice time? No. But my brain knew what to expect and what to tell me at each stage to remain calm, at peace, and in control.

Just like the practice tracks say, don’t judge your hypnosis in practice and let it happen as your body wants and needs. I feel like the same is for birthing time hypnosis- don’t judge or wonder if it’s working. Just go with what feels right! Our brains and bodies are amazing!

I’m so glad for the opportunity to re-wire the broken parts of my thinking toward positivity and embracing childbirth without fear. One of the most interesting results of my Hypnobabies studies and practice is that my disappointment of my first birth has faded and my memory of the long and hard postpartum discomfort has decreased exponentially. I can’t physically feel the discomfort anymore when I think back on how hard it was. This has definitely been so healing, emotionally and physically, and I’m so grateful I was led to this course!

Whenever and however your baby decides to come, you’ve got this, friends!!
