Birth story of my first hypno-baby and second son, Ryker!

On 10/24 at 1:30 am I woke up to pee and felt my water leaking. I called my midwife to give her a heads up and she encouraged me to go back to sleep, eat, hydrate and balance activity and rest until pressure waves (Hypnobabies term for contractions) began. Between the anticipation and excitement that I would soon be meeting my baby, I needed the Deepening Your Hypnosis (Hypnobabies track to deepen the level of hypnosis) track to help me fall back asleep. I woke up later that morning and began listening to the birthing day tracks even though my waves hadn’t started and spent the day with my mom preparing my home for my planned water birth.

(19 hours) My midwife and I spoke about next steps and she said that if I was comfortable with it, she’d let me go 72 hours of ruptured membranes, given no signs of infection present. I was SO relieved to hear this, as I was starting to get discouraged at this point.

(36 hours) My midwife came by to assess me and baby and gave me some herbs to try to help things along but warned that waves could pick up fast. And wow, was she right! Intense pressure waves started within minutes of finishing the tincture regimen, and an hour later they were coming 3 minutes apart. I called my doula and birth photographer to let them know this might be it, but I still wasn’t completely convinced it was really my birthing time (Hypnobabies term for labor) – my hypnosis kept me truly at ease and comfortable.

An hour after they arrived, I was feeling a little pushy, so my doula decided it was time to call my midwife to ensure we’d have enough time to set up the birth pool. The student midwife arrived first and checked me. I was already complete and immediately felt the urge to push so my water birth went out the door. This is when I lost hypnosis and all sense of calm. After 45 minutes of pushing on the bed, I moved to a birth stool and could feel him descend further with less effort. The power of gravity during birth is real! As he started to crown, my midwife asked the student midwife, “are you seeing what I’m seeing?” His swollen, bruised up little face emerged first and with two more pushes he was out at 12:44 am on 10/26! Out of 2,000+ births, I was her 4th face presentation.

I could not have asked for a better birth, but this little boy definitely threw me for a loop! Having my water broken for almost 48 hours, a fast 4-hour birthing time and his face presentation position causing extra discomfort and prolonged pushing – I was reminded that babies really do choose how and when to be born!
