So I’m finally writing out the birth story of our beautiful daughter Lyra Joy Lamke born 7-12 at 42 weeks in hope of encouraging some mamas who are feeling pressured when they are past their guess date.

My guess date was June 28, 2017 that was the day I had my membranes swept in hope of having my birthing time start. So I kept trucking along listening to my Joyful Pregnancy Affirmations on repeat for 8+ hours a day while I worked. I stopped participating in social media and changed my phone number as a way to limit the constant “check in” from our 100s of loving family and friends.

On Monday July 10th I had the Foley Bulb inserted and it came out naturally later that day when I had dilated to 3 cm. The next day our birthing time still hasn’t started so after passing a non- stress test I took a homeopathic herbal induction including castor oil every 15 minutes for 9 hours as instructed by my midwife. At 9 pm on Tuesday July 11th I still hadn’t started my birthing day in time. So my midwife told me to get a good nights rest and we will talk about transitioning care out of the birth center the next day.

I woke up at 3:30 am with pressure waves four minutes apart lasting a minute for an hour. My midwife and Doula Laura told me that’s great but many moms stay at 4-1-1 for a while so try to go back to sleep and call us if anything changes. An hour later at 4:30 am I had progressed to 3-1-1 and called both my midwife and my Doula who said get to the birth center as soon as possible because today was my baby’s birthing day!!!!

When I arrived I was 6 cm dilated and put into the tub which felt amazing. After some back pressure and some intense pressure waves we used some spinning babies techniques to get our daughter in the best position possible. My favorite position was the empowered mama yoga pose which opened my hips. I had 6 sterile water injections in my back to help with the back pressure. They helped for what seemed like 5 minutes.

My A-mazing birthing partner/husband then proceeded to apply constant counter pressure on my back for 2.5 hours while I went through transformation. Our doula also prompted us to tell the story of how we first met. My birth partner did most of the talking but I reminded him of how I was bribed with the promise of Mexican food after a rugby social when I was super hungry. I got a huge rush of endorphins and energy after hearing him recall why he first fell in love with me that night ?.

Once I was complete and our daughter was aligned it was easy to push her out naturally on my timing from an open lunge position. I was able to catch her and bring her to my stomach and hold her in my arms at 9:08am on July 12 (5.5 hours of pressure waves in all) She was birthed peacefully, joyfully and at the perfect time 42 weeks just before we would have needed to transfer out of the birth center.

I have never felt more empowered, joyful and hungry all at the same time. I felt like my hypno-anesthesia was always enough and went to a really primal and athletic Special Safe Place. I kept picturing having so much orange hypno-aesthesia that I was like Michael Jordan on the Gatorade commercials- dripping orange sweat ?. I told myself each pressure was only really intense for 10 seconds at the peak and I could do ANYTHING for 10 seconds.

After Lyra Joy was birthed, because of all of the vernix, my birthing team determined that her guess date was WAY OFF by a couple of weeks (I have 40 day cycles not 28 day). I hope this inspires you that you can have the birthing of your dreams and they timing for you and your precise baby will be perfect!
