If I can home birth so can you! Actually, I think I kind of free birthed without realizing.

.

Meet Koa Philip, our 2nd Hypno-baby. A totally different and much shorter birth than my first birth.

.

At 10:30 am my midwife came over for our 41-week check. We were getting a lot of phone calls from family wondering where baby is but thanks to Hypnobabies I knew he would make his entrance when he was ready. Even though my mind wondered, I was able to bring it back and trust. I was enjoying my Birthing Day Affirmations daily which helped keep me at ease.

.

My midwife felt baby was near as things were happening (I had experienced pre birthing waves for a few days) and suggested maybe I go for a final Osteopathic treatment to see if my pelvis needed a little adjusting. This felt right to me, so I called our Osteopath who was kind enough to fit me in at 3:30 pm that afternoon.

.

As I walked into Finn’s office, he checked my posture and sure enough my pelvic alignment needed some small, gentle shifts. As soon as I went to stand up, I leaned over onto his bed and experienced one intense pressure wave (Hypnobabies term for contractions). He rubbed my back and assured me I was strong and powerful, and that birthing was the most natural thing in the world. He also mentioned that sometimes he assists women who have their babies that night so I shouldn’t be surprised if that happens to me.

.

As I arrived home, things heated up a little. I listened to my Your Birthing Time Begins (Hypnobabies reminder track of all the tools for birthing) as I prepared dinner for us and my 1 1/2 son.

.

We called our midwife to let her know where we were at and she asked my husband to start to get things ready. I took my son into his room for bedtime and lay next to his crib as I timed my birthing waves myself with my app on my phone. I listened to my Easy Comfortable Childbirth track with my headphones in and every few minutes I heard my husband Phil, with the pump inflating the birthing pool.

.

Once my son was asleep at 8:30 pm I had just enough walking time in my body to walk back into our bedroom and lie on the bed. I was no longer in a position to time my own birthing waves and thought they were around 2-3 minutes apart so told my husband and he asked our midwife to make her way to the house.

.

Phil couldn’t believe we were that far along as I was so quiet and seemed so relaxed and comfortable. He even thought I was asleep on the bed at times.

.

It wasn’t long before I felt pressure quite low down and knew baby was making his way into the birthing space. Hypnobabies is amazing as I knew where I was at and felt baby the whole time. I was very present with him. I had heard other mums say this but never dreamed I would have this experience.

.

My husband was still filling the pool and getting things ready when our Doula arrived. She was calm, soft spoken and I felt she knew exactly where I was at in my progress. Immediately she began rubbing my back, reassuring and supporting me as each wave came and went. I told her I was comfortable on the bed but I felt it would be best for baby if I sat on the ball as he was quite low. She agreed it would be a good idea to use gravity.

.

Next I heard our midwife, Andrea arrive and felt her come into the bedroom and place her hand gently on my back. She left again and came back to check baby’s heart rate. To do this she asked me to lie on the bed again, which I did reluctantly. Before she could begin to touch my body for baby’s heart rate, I flipped onto all 4’s on the bed for another birthing wave so she said she would come back to check after.

.

As Andrea left the room getting things ready quietly in the living room with my husband and Doula, my waters released, and I felt baby move down even further. Then I felt like I just jumped up off the bed and plunged my body into the birthing pool (I’m sure it didn’t look this gymnastic). My Doula Ashley had only enough time to pull down my underwear to my knees when I felt baby’s head crowning and Ashley called to the others “ah … the head is out?”. I had my Pushing Baby Out track (Hypnobabies track just for pushing) on for maybe 2 minutes. I did use the PEACE cue (Hypnobabies cue for instant physical comfort) out loud through each wave in the water which kept me calm and in control.

.

Our midwife and my husband along with another midwife who had just arrived ran into the room just in time to see baby Koa born and caught by me!

.

My husband was still holding the kettle with water for the birthing pool. Afterwards he said I seemed to know exactly what to do and when I caught Koa, I turned him around and pulled him out of the water up to my chest.

.

As I looked up, I saw this circle of support who up until the week before was only going to be us and our midwife. Even on the day we didn’t know if the 2nd midwife would be free to attend. Everyone was crying. Each one of them.

.

Experiencing a birth at home in our bedroom, catching my own son into my arms as he entered this world. All I could say was “That was amazing” … and it truly was.

.

One thing I noted was that both births their visions I held tightly came to pass. I had a vision of me birthing in the pool on all fours that was like a record playing in my mind for months. I also had watched a video where a mother caught her own baby and I had seen it over and over again in my mind, and the final thought that kept playing was a Mum who free birthed and when she caught her pink baby she said “That was amazing”. So even down to my own actions and words it came to life! I can’t say I deliberately manifested all of those things, it’s just true. What you think about most during Hypnobabies comes to pass. The same thing happened with my first birth. Down to the words spoken and the angle that I looked up at my husband.

.

Thank you, Kerry Tuschhoff, and Hypnobabies for giving us the faith, strength and education to do this. I knew other people home birthed, but I wasn’t one of them. Thanks to you, now I wouldn’t birth any other way
