Leslie’s Hypnobabies Hospital Birth Story

Here is my Hospital Birth Story

“As I had visualized, I felt zero pain, just the hugging of my baby by my uterus. Within each wave I was able to connect with my baby, to tell him what was happening and how I was so excited to have him in my arms soon! It was just so magical. I am SO grateful to Hypnobabies for this beautiful birth story experience and beyond.”

On January 12th, the first new moon of the year and during a *crazy* windstorm in Seattle, I cooked a delicious, healthy dinner and thought to myself, “this would be a perfect pre-birthing-time (Hypnobabies term for labor) meal!” and promptly threw it up 2 hours later. As soon as I did, my waves (Hypnobabies term for contractions) began.

I had been doing my Birthing Day Affirmations for the week or two before and was so glad I did. This time, lying in bed, candles all around, was my favorite of my birthing time. As I had visualized, I felt zero pain, just the hugging of my baby by my uterus. Within each wave I was able to connect with my baby, to tell him what was happening and how I was so excited to have him in my arms soon! It was just so magical. I am SO grateful to Hypnobabies for this beautiful experience and beyond.

My waves stopped twice for 30-45 minutes which was disheartening, but I was able to nap, and I kept feeling something descending. The doula said it could be any number of things, including my water going down through my cervix (ding ding ding), but said it could also be practice waves and not time yet. I knew that wasn’t true but still felt so disheartened. I asked if we could go for a walk to see if things would ramp up. We did the Spinning Babies side lying stretch first and left the house. I had one headphone in, but it was hard to stay connected to my hypnosis. I also was wanting to connect with my doula and chat. So, I did and the waves really kicked off and became intense but manageable. We did some stretches on some stairs and walked back to the house.

When I got home, I said I needed to lay down to get back into hypnosis because it was getting too intense. When I laid down, I was having a hard time doing so and started vocalizing. I didn’t do that in my first birth, and it helped so much. The doula said it was time to get me to the hospital (later she told me I was getting “grunty”).

After one wave in the car… my body started pushing. No pain, just ejection reflex. I used all my power to keep him inside me, and my waters were intact, so I think that helped. At the hospital, my water actually bulged out of me while we were waiting in the lobby to be escorted up to the birth center which was pretty crazy and a little scary.

When I got up to the room a flurry of nurses came around me (not my birth plan) and my babe came out on the next wave. My body pushed him out and I just slowly allowed, eased, and breathed him out so I wouldn’t tear (and I didn’t!). He was born in his waters which I didn’t realize could happen or how special it is. A nurse told me that he gave himself a water birth because I wasn’t able to have one (from getting there too late, I was hoping to christen their beautiful new birthing tub!). I really loved that. The flurry of nurses was because my midwife wasn’t there and the on-call OB was busy so a nurse caught him which I know isn’t their preference, resulting in the more stressful vibe of the room.

I really wanted to experience an unmedicated hospital birth story and was so grateful that I was. 90% of my birthing time was *exactly* what I wanted, and the last 10% was not. As a friend pointed out, my body birthed exactly as I wanted, just my environment wasn’t what I had hoped for. I am so incredibly proud of and in awe of my amazing body. And so grateful to Hypnobabies for allowing me to ENJOY my birth! I think I have to do it again now (!), just to experience it, to maybe get a girl on attempt #3 , and to have the cozy home birth I desire but wasn’t sure I could commit to after my first birth experience.

Check out this great birth story!
