“It felt good to be vocal and ride each wave while on hands and knees. Throughout the process, my husband would touch my shoulder to remind me to relax, and I kept thinking “open, open, open.”

My birthing time started on Monday evening at 6 pm as I was putting my son to bed. Pressure waves (Hypnobabies word for contractions) were so manageable that I assumed I wasn’t yet in birthing time (Hypnobabies word for labor), so I simply used my Peace cue (Hypnobabies cue for instant physical comfort). I wasn’t able to sleep, so my husband and I played a board game and relaxed in the living room. Around 3 am, pressure waves were still quite easily managed, but they were lasting 45 seconds and coming every 2 minutes. I listened to Your Birthing Time Begins (Reminder of all the tools, tracks for birthing), and Birthing Day Affirmations. We decided to call the midwives, thinking things were progressing very quickly. Around 6 am, pressure waves slowed down, so the midwives and photographer went home. I was told it could be another week before the baby arrived.

However, I intuitively knew that pressure waves had eased up because my husband and I needed rest. We had both been awake for 24 hours at this point, so we laid in bed and napped. I was awoken an hour later with pressure waves increasing in intensity, and I turned on Fear Clearing (Hypnobabies track for releasing any fears) while I let my husband sleep. As soon as the track ended, I knew I needed to wake him up and hop in the shower. He set up the speaker so I could keep listening to my hypnosis tracks while I rode the pressure waves in the shower. The hot water was so relieving!

Around 2 pm, I was very suddenly feeling the urge to push, so my husband called the midwives back as he filled the birthing tub. My midwife said she knew as soon as she saw me that I must have been at 10 cm and ready to push. I was saying “ooh” and “ahh” with each pressure wave in a very primal way. It felt good to be vocal and ride each wave while on hands and knees. Throughout the process, my husband would touch my shoulder (a Hypnobabies cue) to remind me to relax more deeply, and I kept thinking “open, open, open.” We kept my hypnosis tracks playing continuously through a speaker, although I am not sure what ones I listened to. All I know is that Kerry’s voice was very reassuring and soothing, and I was able to focus entirely on the sound of her voice, tuning everyone else out.

I didn’t need to keep my eyes closed for hypnosis, but it felt better to be in the moment and feel every sensation with my eyes closed. My husband switched over to the Pushing Baby Out track (Hypnobabies track just for pushing) when I was ready, and I tried pushing while on my back for a few pressure waves. At this point, my membranes released. I knew instinctively that I needed to get in the birthing tub. Her head was born with the very first pressure wave I experienced in the tub, and her body slipped out shortly after. It was a very intense sensation, but instantly relieving and deeply beautiful.

We were snuggled up in bed as a family of 4 within an hour of my baby’s birth. This was a healing birth for me, and everything unfolded exactly as we needed, fairly similar to what I had envisioned. I know that Hypnobabies was crucial to this empowering and gorgeous experience, and I am so very grateful!
