I had an easy comfortable birth at home with my first baby. Bianca was born on January 21 in our kitchen!

Pregnant person pushing in birth tub with midwife and partner during Home WaterbirthI’ll be honest, I was a bit skeptical of Hypnobabies, but meditation had been an important part of my life, so I decided to give it a go. The day before Bianca was born, I began having light pressure waves (Hypnobabies term for contractions). I felt so optimistic and positive that I really didn’t notice them and when I did, I accepted them.

By the afternoon I knew these practice waves were no longer practice and I finished up work and excitedly told my husband to prepare. Since this was going to be our last full day alone for the rest of our lives, we decided to go on a coffee date! I remember telling the barista I was about to give birth; she didn’t believe me but gave me all the left-over pastries for the day just in case I needed the energy.

Still comfortable in my birthing time (Hypnobabies term for labor) I went home and played video games until bed. I turned on my birthing time tracks and fell asleep but my husband anxiously stayed awake. At 4AM I woke up and the pressure waves intensified. I jumped in the shower and began breathing through the waves while my husband called our midwife.Baby's head emerging in birth tub during home waterbirth

We decided with the midwife that we’d wait until waves were closer together so we could all rest. I slapped on the TENs unit my doula gave me, listened to my tracks, and rested. My husband tracked my waves with the TENs unit and called the midwife. Everybody came into the house quietly, prepared the pool, and let me rest. I also got to eat all those pastries! 4 hours passed like this.

At around 8-9AM I realized I was in transformation (Hypnobabies term for transition). It was honestly awe inspiring. When the sensation was so intense, I kept saying, “my body is capable of creating this much power.” I told the midwife I was ready to get in the birthing tub and waddled over. Let me tell you, that warm water is amazing.

What surprised the midwives is that she not ONE but TWO hands by her face! A double nuchal hand. Usually, this presentation makes for a long hard birthing time and tearing. Amazingly she came out quickly and I didn’t need any sutures.

On the birth record apparently my first words were, “I did it! That wasn’t so hard.”

*BOP* The midwives got concerned when my placenta wasn’t being birthed quick enough. They intervened with Pitocin, and I birthed it but alongside it came a clot. It seems the clot was actually blocking the placenta but luckily it wasn’t too much blood.new parent gazing down at newborn baby

I got out of the pool and decided to lay on the kitchen floor instead of walking the distance to the bedroom. I got a saline drip and hand fed snacks while I gained my strength back after the placenta. At some point one of the midwives also gave me a massage lol!

Eventually my husband carried me to bed on request and the midwives cleaned up. My placenta was a heart shape and they decided to stamp it on paper for me as a keepsake.

Everyone was shocked I had my first birth at home and honestly, I have to thank Hypnobabies. Without hypnosis I doubt I would have been able to relax and let my double nuchal baby come out naturally. So far birth has been the easiest thing about becoming a mom! We’re excited to have a second hypno-baby in a few years.
