Kimberly’s Hypnobabies Whirlwind Hospital Birth

“From arrival to birth 17mins- it was a whirlwind of events being in a French speaking hospital and short on time but I am SO grateful for Hypnobabies as I was able to get to a 9 without even realizing it.”

I woke up early this morning just after 3 am (Belgium Time) with very slight pressure waves (Hypnobabies term for contractions) that were inconsistent. I left my bed and sat on a ball for some time but decided to get some rest and I fell back to sleep around 4 am. I awoke at 6:30 am to get my older 5 kiddos ready for school. When I got up and moved around to get everyone out the door by 7:30 I was experiencing cramping and lower back discomfort but still wasn’t sure that it was my birthing time (Hypnobabies term for labor). My husband works 45mins away (on a good day without traffic) and I asked him to stay with me just in case it was.

At around 10 am my pressure waves were coming consistently every 5mins but lasting just about 30seconds…we talked about going to the grocery store to stock up and walk around…as I got ready to go we realized that maybe we need to plan to get the hospital sooner. My hope was to have a water birth and I wanted to get there soon enough to enjoy the water. We picked up my oldest and youngest from school- the oldest to attend the birth and take pictures and the youngest so she could be cared for after school.

12:15 pm we made it to the hospital. During the time of picking up kids and the drive I listened to Deepening Your Hypnosis (Hypnobabies track to deepen the level of hypnosis) and Easy First Stage (Hypnobabies main birthing day track)- both super helpful during the car ride. We are currently living overseas in Belgium and so there are a few differences in hospital policies as well as the language barrier to navigate through.

During car ride I was thinking I would have at least an hour at the hospital to get settled and in the water. I had a few pressure waves in Car towards the end that were stronger and felt more downward pressure but still was able to breath and relax through them with my finger drop. I switched to center to walk up to the maternity ward. I was in denial that my pressure waves were so close- my husband later informed me that from the car to check in I stopped about 5 times but, in my hypnosis, I didn’t acknowledge this. The nurses met me immediately asking if I needed to push and I declined and said I just want in the tub but they insisted on checking me- to which I was resistant thinking I had more time…but agreed to. I was told I was a 9 and it was almost time to push.

I was shocked and lost hypnosis because I was really thinking I had more time- I continued to ask for a water birth but they in broken English said there wasn’t enough time. It became a rushed situation, and I was slightly heartbroken over not getting the water birth. I couldn’t get back into my hypnosis. I did my best to relax and breath. They broke my water because it appeared that baby’s heart rate was dropping. I did have the wherewithal to tell them my husband was going to catch our baby. They gloved him up and after several pushes he caught our sweet baby girl!

From arrival to birth 17mins- it was a whirlwind of events being in a French speaking hospital and short on time but I am SO grateful for Hypnobabies as I was able to get to a 9 without even realizing it. Though I did not get my water birth I am happy with how it all turned out!
