Hannah’s Fast Hypnobabies Hospital Birth

“I told my husband to get my phone and turn on Pushing Baby Out (Hypnobabies track just for pushing). I turned it up very loud and used my Release cue (Hypnobabies cue to instantly enter hypnosis) to go into hypnosis immediately and ignored everything everyone said and every person in the room. I pushed my baby out comfortably and easily in what my husband said was 3 pushes that made birth look easy.“

My water broke around 3:30 am Friday April 1st. I have never had my water break (third baby) so it really surprised me. It wasn’t a trickle but more of a gush that didn’t stop. I got up and found a towel and sat on my birthing ball. Then told my husband that my water broke but I didn’t feel any pressure waves (Hypnobabies term for contractions) or anything. He said we are leaving right now and to get in the truck. I didn’t want to go to the hospital, so I took my time getting ready while he was freaking out and calling my parents. We had to meet them with my 19 mo. I reluctantly got into the truck and only had a few pressure waves that weren’t uncomfortable.

Newborn baby smilingI was already 4 cm when I went to my doctor appointment earlier that day and let them strip my membranes. My baby was measuring large and I have been on blood thinners this pregnancy due to a previous DVT postpartum. My husband is driving and calling everyone and my doctor and just basically freaking out while I am totally calm (my husband listened to his birth partner track exactly one time and that is the extent of his participation in my Hypnobabies course). I got my phone and headphones ready to listen to my hypnosis tracks on the way to the hospital and for some reason I could not access them at all. I only downloaded the hypnosis “maintenance” tracks and the tracks I thought I might use during my birthing time onto my phone (which those all worked) along with the birthing time (Hypnobabies term for labor) tracks. But since I hadn’t listened to the birthing day tracks yet I hadn’t tested them.

So, then I started to get very anxious as I heard a pop and then my birthing waves started to pick up and my tracks wouldn’t work. Finally, I realized that they were offline (I am not at all tech savvy and hadn’t really used google drive until taking the Hypnobabies course. The drive to the hospital is about 50 minutes from my house so by this point I had already spent a good 30 minutes or longer not in hypnosis during my birthing time. Then when we arrived at the hospital, we weren’t actually sure where to go in due to Covid. I have previously given birth at 2 different hospitals. So, my husband and dad are driving to park the truck while my mom is driving me to the emergency (we went to the wrong part first).

When I get out of the elevator, I am laughing at something my dad said earlier but completely at ease in my birthing time and I hear one of the nurses say, “are we admitting her?” And they said, “no you can check her first” and they did not believe I was in active birthing time at all. They were actually being kind of rude to me acting like I was wasting their time. When they checked me, I was at 5 cm and fully effaced. This was actually discouraging to me because my first pregnancy I showed up at the hospital at 6 ½ cm with pressure waves that were less intense.

I am trying to remain focused and in hypnosis at this point but kind of difficult to do with no one taking me seriously. The nurse did say that “God must really love you because you don’t seem in pain at all.” [Clearly she had never seen hypnosis for childbirth at work before!] After I said I didn’t want an epidural they said we don’t see too many births like yours here and then finally put me into the system and let me go to an actual room. They started being a lot nicer too after I said that the cookies I brought were for them. SO, after getting into the room finally my husband goes and sits on the couch and I have to answer all 16 million questions about my medications and everything.

By this point I couldn’t possibly be in hypnosis, so I have to yell at my husband to get over next to me and act like he is going to help me. My aunt was basically my doula in my last pregnancy. Though it wasn’t a hypno-birth I was able to handle it because she reminded me to breathe and put wash cloths on my head and reminded me that I could do this when I thought that I couldn’t. My husband was very freaked out by being the only person in the hospital and I was getting very upset at him because he was freaking out (though I’m the one giving birth) and I felt completely alone. So, by this point I get off the bed and go to the bathroom because I feel like I have to use it. I am burning up and I don’t think I can do this, so I tell my nurse I want an epidural. I have never had one before, but I just feel like I can’t handle the discomfort [from not using hypnosis] even though I gave birth naturally (VBAC) with my last pregnancy.

I am feeling very uncomfortable at this point and feel like I failed at Hypnobabies and failed period. My nurse is like just let me check you really quick I called the anesthesiologist. I say okay but I still want and epidural and now! I went from 5 cm to 10 cm in less than an hour. The on call doctor comes in and says “I hate to be the one to tell you this but I cannot give you an epidural because you had a dose of heparin way too close to your birthing time (Hypnobabies term for labor) and you would most likely hemorrhage and also that even if I gave it to you right now it couldn’t possibly work in time to even do anything.” My husband chooses this point to actually act like a helpful birth partner and is telling me that I can do this and to breathe etc.

I said then what can you do? And he said “I can help you birth this baby right now. “I told my husband to get my phone and turn on Pushing Baby Out (Hypnobabies hypnosis track just for pushing). I turned it up very loud and used my Release cue (Hypnobabies cue to instantly enter hypnosis) to go into hypnosis immediately and ignored everything everyone said and every person in the room. I pushed my baby out comfortably and easily in what my husband said was 3 pushes that made birth look easy.

My baby was larger than he was measuring at and his hand came out beside his head (compound birth). I did not tear at all (last birth I had a 3rd degree tear with a much smaller baby). I gave birth to a 9lb 9oz baby boy (it was a surprise until his birthdate). Dean Alexander Grant. Even though I went out of hypnosis completely in my birthing time Hypnobabies still helped me push my baby out and have a more comfortable birth. What was most surprising about the Hypnobabies course was how it helped me postpartum and during pregnancy. I have suffered with anxiety about giving birth and about hospitals in general.

After birthing this baby what I felt more than anything and what I never felt previously was PEACE. I still feel peace. My body has recovered remarkably faster and better than previous births though this baby was much larger than my other children. I feel happy, healthy, and whole. I have suffered postpartum depression twice, but I haven’t felt that at all after this birth. If I have another baby, I will be doing things quite differently. I will not let numbers discourage me again. From my water breaking to my baby being born my birthing time was exactly 3 hours and 25 minutes (my doctor missed my birth and the on-call doctor also almost missed my birth). I will make sure to have someone answer every question for me that they can without me. I will test my birthing tracks prior to going into my birthing time. I will make sure that whoever is watching my other children is actually at my house when I am going into my birthing time. I will believe in myself more than I did, and I will make sure to have a steady stream of hypnosis the second I think that I am in my birthing time. Hypnobabies does work but you have to believe in it and use it effectively.
