Tuesday evening I was experiencing some odd but sharp sensations in my lower abdomen, assumed it was the baby in an odd position or maybe even gas, though I didn’t feel very gassy. Made my husband take me to the store to get a robe for the hospital and insisted it had to be that night. Just in case.

So later that night around 10:30 I’m in bed and was feeling some pretty tight crampy sensations but only like menstrual cramps but they were consistent so I started timing them. They were coming about every 7-8 min lasting about 30-45 seconds. I told my husband and he and I decided maybe he should nap so he can be well rested just in case. My other pregnancies never went like this … my water always broke first and I never felt any waves really until I was well into it, somewhere around 8 cm.

Well I put on my Easy First Stage track and continued to time these waves until about 12:30 … at that point they were about 4 min apart. They began spacing out a bit so I decided to try and get some rest. I managed to sleep until about 3 am while listening to my tracks – Deepening Hypnosis, Visualize Your Birth, etc. … when I woke up they were around 3.5 min apart. I decided to try and drink some water because truthfully, I wasn’t uncomfortable enough to really believe these were Birthing waves … I was thinking maybe Braxton Hicks.

Well the water didn’t help … so I took a very short warm bath and listened to my tracks to try and relax but eventually said ok it’s time to go. Woke up my husband and at this point my waves were about 3 min apart lasting about 45-55 seconds. Well my husband quickly got my bag in the car and came back upstairs to help me put my pants on and walk me out. Only by the time he came back and got me (a matter of 2 minutes, my waves were suddenly at 2 min apart and I was leaning down on the tall hamper in our bedroom breathing through a wave when my body just told me to push.

With that one push, my water broke all over my bedroom floor (thank goodness for hardwood! Lol) and with that, my planned hospital birth quickly became an unplanned home birth. My husband realized we would never make it to the hospital in time (about 20 min ride) so he asked if I wanted to get in the tub, which I agreed. I had another wave and pushed with that one then got into a tub that was only about 1/4 full. I immediately got on all fours and leaned my arms against the back of the tub, had 2 more pushy waves when I reached down and realized her head was right there, crowning.

I never knew how far along I actually was until that moment! Well I instinctually began stretching my labia around her head and within seconds, I gave it another big push and had her head in my hands and pulled her out onto my chest. I sat there in total shock and disbelief that this had just happened! My husband couldn’t believe what he saw lol we just stared at each other in total shock. I just birthed our baby in our bathtub without even much thought.

I honestly have to credit Hypnobabies for allowing me to remain calm enough to sleep comfortably through what I can only imagine was my early Birthing Time. All in all from the start of my waves to the time she was born, it was 6.5 hrs. She was born at (approximately) 5:10am. We were so shocked we just forgot to even look at the time to be honest lol I was so relaxed and level headed.

I’ll be honest, I did have some discomfort because everything happened just so fast that I sort of tossed the headphones to the ground at some point, not even thinking about playing the tracks out loud and the headphones were just bothering me so much by that point but I did use my Peace and Relax cues as much as I could remember to use them. That along with some breathing that I just found to be helpful during the wave … I found myself tensing up and would tell myself to Relax. When I did that and dropped my shoulders, I felt much better during the waves.

I never really knew I was in transformation until I was having pushy feelings. I literally pushed 5 times (one broke my water and then another in between, then 3 more birthed my baby in the tub). Hypnobabies just helped me to stay calm during it all. I’m still in awe. I honestly visualized this birth going exactly as it went, even with my intentions of going to the hospital. I just couldn’t help but picture it this way when listening to my Visualize Your Birth track … and the entire experience played out almost exact.

Middle of the night, quiet and calm, kids asleep … even my in laws who live downstairs never heard a thing. They woke up for work and heard my husband walking around quickly and came up to make sure we were ok (this was at 5:30am) and my husband just looks at his father and said “Kristal just had the baby … in the tub … it’s a girl” lol they laughed and didn’t believe him. Well they quickly realized he wasn’t joking lol. I can’t get over the fact that I can literally play out the images in my head during the Visualize Your Birth track and it was exactly how the night happened. It’s so surreal … I’m still on a cloud!

I’m very sorry if I over explained and rambled but I’m just fascinated by it all. And can I tell you, I feel great! Recovery has been amazing and Gabriella is amazing … a little angel. So calm and peaceful. We opted to stay home after and not go to the hospital. We clamped and cut the cord ourselves 2 hours after birth, thanks to the guidance of a doula friend who told us what to do.

I felt guilty as if I had abandoned my Hypnobabies training toward the end, especially since I never even got to play my Pushing Baby Out track. My husband keeps reminding me that Hypnobabies helped it all for us … I took from the program exactly what I needed in those moments and utilized them accordingly. It’s amazing how much I actually did use the techniques and didn’t even have to think about it. I also didn’t have much time considering how fast it all happened. I wish I had thought about getting the camera out and recording this birth. That was one of my biggest requests if at the hospital but it didn’t even cross my mind that night lol.

My perfect birth … exactly how I wanted it to go! Thank you Hypnobabies for giving me the confidence and skills to make this dream come true!

Btw, my 7 1/2 year old woke up around 7:30 am and just in time to help cut the cord, which he had been asking us to do!?
