From 3 Centimeters to Baby in 50 Minutes

“This baby went from water breaking to in my arms in less than 50 mins. The midwife said no one thought I was advancing because of how “calm” I was. My body was ready to birth the baby and my hypnosis techniques which kept me calm was deceptive to the nurses, I think.”

Hypnobabies helped me have such a better pregnancy that I knew I was going to be happy with whatever route my baby came into this world. This was not at all the birth I envisioned, but I do believe it was the right one for me and my baby.

I had pressure waves (Hypnobabies word for contractions) for several weeks leading up to baby’s arrival. So, on her guess date, when the waves started to pick up I was cautiously optimistic. Around 9 pm the waves were regular enough I started listening to my hypnosis tracks. I stayed home in hypnosis until midnight when I decided it was time to go in.

When we got to the hospital, I was only dilated to a 3 and my waves completely stopped. This is normal as my body doesn’t love the sterile environment and it tends to clog things up a little. It’s one of the reasons I wanted to get there early in the birthing process so I could have time to adjust and go deeper into hypnosis. They monitored me for two 20 min periods and she said I had 20 more mins to dilate or I couldn’t be checked in. As she left the room my water broke. When I called her back in, she checked and admitted me.

Pressure waves immediately became more intense. I bounced on the ball as they checked me in and said they were calling my midwife. Things progressed more rapidly from there than I ever could have imagined. My first birth was 22 hours with an IV drug towards the end, my second was all natural and around 7 hours. Both took close to 4 hours of pushing.

I was left to my own devices with my husband as my birthing partner. I felt I needed to poop (which I know is a sign for pushing, but it had only been about 15 mins and things weren’t that intense, so I wasn’t really understanding what was happening, I was just staying focused on riding each pressure wave and listening to my hypnosis tracks). I went to the restroom alone and things got really intense. I called for my husband and he got the nurse. They said I needed to move from the bed.

With much convincing, I moved to the side of the bed. At this point my headphones also died and they said they saw the baby’s head which was surprising because it had been so fast, so my husband put Pushing Baby Out on out loud on his phone, but it was hard to hear and the room was a bit less peaceful than I had hoped because the midwife wasn’t there and it all had happened so quickly no one was ready for babies arrival.

As the nurses rushed around, I explained the baby was coming. The nurse got behind me to catch (I was on all fours), but the baby came out face first, so she came forward and I caught her myself! I was in shock as the nurse announced it was a girl (we have 2 older boys and this was a surprise). I pulled her to my chest and stayed on the floor a while before getting into the bed. As I got into the bed, my midwife arrived and helped me birth the placenta and I cut the cord myself!

This baby went from water breaking to in my arms in less than 50 mins. The midwife said no one thought I was advancing because of how “calm” I was. My body was ready to birth the baby and my hypnosis techniques which kept me calm were deceptive to the nurses, I think.

Though not “pain-free” I can’t imagine this birth without hypnosis. I am SO happy with catching my own baby and how she came into this world. Now focusing on getting her latch better, so we can establish a positive nursing relationship.

Thank you; Hypnobabies and this group for all the support and allowing me to share our birth story!
