On 12/5 I was 38 and 4, my nurse-midwife suggested induction because of an AFI (Amniotic Fluid Index) of 30 after consistently watching my AFI for many weeks now and a lower heart rate of 107. She knew it was one of the things going into this pregnancy that I wanted to be avoided at almost all costs. I trusted her that she would not even suggest this if she didn’t feel very strongly that it’s what needed to be considered.

I went into the hospital that evening around 7 pm and received my first dose of Cytotec at about 730 pm. From this point on I had consistent pressure waves (Hypnobabies word for contractions) every 1-2 minutes each lasting, according to my husband, about 45sec to 1min.

My plan always was to have my husband, mom and 2 sisters in the room as my support team. All of them were there and were able to help and guide me through the initial waves. 4 doses of Cytotec passed and at about 1 pm my midwife wanted to break my waters slow and controlled so I wouldn’t have a prolapsed cord. Up to this point, my waves were frequent and moderately powerful but I was very comfortable, moving freely and able to find positions of comfort easily. I felt every wave in my low back and only some in both my back and abdomen.

When my waters were broken and my baby’s head finally engaged the waves instantly grew in power and intensity. They were still about 1 minute apart lasting about 1 minute each. The Peace (Hypnobabies cue for instant physical comfort) and Relax (Hypnobabies cue to deepen hypnosis) cues were amazingly helpful. Many hours passed, apparently, and the waves continued to grow in time, length and power. There were some waves that strung together 3 or 4 at a time without de-escalation. There were only about 2 positions that made me moderately comfortable and between waves I would sometimes search for a new position, however, while searching, 30 seconds would pass and I would feel another wave come on and it took every ounce of power in me not to panic trying to get into a comfortable position for the remainder of the wave. There were, honestly, a few waves that I would panic and my husband would look at me and re-center my mind and my hypnosis so I could choose to continue using Hypnobabies, and for this, I am so grateful.

My waves continued to grow in length and power until about 7:00 at which time my husband picked up on a change in my tones. He told the nurse that I sounded pushy and to please check me. She told me I was at a 6ish/7. At this point I panicked again, almost emerging from my hypnosis when my mom just kept repeating to me through my waves “open, open, open” I imagined my cervix getting bigger and opening like an orange flower. My nurse through the waves gently remind me not to start pushing and I started to feel out of control again, I asked for a small dose of fentanyl. She got it for me, quickly, gave it, then had a feeling like she should check me again. I had dilated all the way to a 9. My nurse rushed out to call my midwife who then arrived so quickly she was panting while putting on her PPE. It was just enough time for her to arrive and for the bed to break down before I very comfortably pushed my boy down and out in an awesome high knee squat. He is small but mighty born at 7:45 pm on 12/6/19. Weighing in at 5lb7oz, 20in long.
