First Time Mom Cat’s Hypnobabies Birth

“I asked hubby to call the midwife. She asked us to meet her at the birthing centre at 4 am. Hubs got everything ready as I started Easy First Stage (Hypnobabies main birthing time track). The 25min ride to the centre was very comfortable and I had about 8 waves in the car. I concentrated on my breathing, hypno-anesthesia and Peace cue (Hypnobabies cue for instant physical comfort) while listening in centre.”

FTM here! I was followed by my local midwife group my entire pregnancy and planned for an unmedicated birthing centre birth.

New parent skin to skin with newborn baby wearing a hatOn Wednesday March 4th (39+1) we went for a hike. Hubby and I also got busy in the evening and tried nipple stimulation. In the late evening I started feeling menstrual-like cramps, very very mild, barely noticeable, and only every 15-20 minutes. I went to bed as usual and fell asleep. Woke up at 3 AM with bloody show! I was excited!

Went to see my midwife later that day and told her about my symptoms. She checked my cervix and stated she could do a membrane sweep if I wanted to. I opted out, since I had just started having early birthing time (Hypnobabies term for labor) symptoms and was only 39+2. We agreed for me to come back Saturday the 6th for a sweep if I was up for it.

That day I went for a light jog and did same routine as the evening before. I started feeling very mild waves (Hypnobabies term for contractions) in the late evening! Every 5-15min or so. I went to bed and was able to sleep while listening to Deepening Your Hypnosis (Hypnobabies track for deepening the level of hypnosis) all night.

My waves continued into Friday the 5th, all day. We went for a little hike again; I would pause during the waves and have hubby hold my belly. In the evening around 9 pm I wanted things to get going so I did nipple stimulation again and that got things progressing fast. Within 1 hour my waves where 4-5min apart and I lost my mucous plug! We started tracking them and they became more intense quickly. I continued concentrating on my breathing as we watched Rupaul (). Then headed to bed with Your Birthing Time Begins (Hypnobabies reminder of all the tools for birthing time) and Deepening Hypnosis again.

By 3 am I could not sleep through the waves anymore. I asked hubby to call the midwife. She asked us to meet her at the birthing centre at 4 am. Hubs got everything ready as I started Easy First Stage (Hypnobabies main birthing time track). The 25min ride to the centre was very comfortable and I had about 8 waves in the car. I concentrated on my breathing, hypno-anesthesia and Peace cue (Hypnobabies cue for instant physical comfort) while listening in centre.Close up of newborn baby on parent's chest

Midwife confirmed I was 4 cm dilated and 90% effaced, head very low. She let us work through waves together. I liked to change positions while in centre. Went into tub, did some birth ball, walked, all completely as I had hoped. Waves continued to increase in intensity but were manageable and comfortable with Peace cue vocalized by myself and hubby, visualizing my hypno-anesthesia, and staying in centre.

Around 9 am I was 7cm and felt motivated. 2 hours later I had only progressed to 8cm, so midwife broke my water. Waves became very intense, and I started feeling a lot of pressure in my bum. Hubby was stellar and repeated “Peace” and “Relax” with me over and over and held me in his arms the whole time while speaking gently in my ears. I was checked again and 9cm but told not to push despite my urge as there was still a full ring of cervix present.

At that point midwives started thinking that baby was malpositioned. They had me complete several positions where I couldn’t move for 3 waves at a time to try and reposition baby. Despite my efforts, baby still was not well positioned, and midwives were not able to determine how to rotate baby. I was still 9cm and had a great amount of pushing urges in my bum.

It was at this point that I decided to transfer to the hospital for some assistance. Within 1hr I was admitted and administered the epidural. It was mild and I could still move my legs and be on all fours. I could still feel waves easily but with less intensity and pressure. The OB checked me and confirmed baby was posterior (must have moved during my birthing time as baby was well position the entire pregnancy). She was able to rotate the head and I easily pushed out my beautiful 8 lbs 5 oz daughter at 18:25 on March 6th with minimal tearing. I was and am over the moon. Although my baby was posterior, I had no waves in my back whatsoever.

Hypnobabies was excellent to give me the frame of mind to go as far as I could with my birthing time. I was initially grieving my change of plans, but quickly realized that this birth happened exactly as my daughter wanted it to. I absolutely loved my birth and thank Hypnobabies for the techniques and relaxation it brought to this beautiful day with my husband and daughter.
