On August 7th I woke up at 3:30 am having light pressure waves (Hypnobabies word for contractions) as I had for the 2 weeks prior. My guess date (Hypnobabies word for due date) wasn’t until the 11th so I was sure it was just my body practicing as it had been. This time though they were coming about every 30 minutes. I had a prenatal massage at 10 am. During my 50-minute massage, I had 3 pressure waves. So, I thought to myself that’s really irregular, it’s for sure Braxton Hicks and if it was really time I would just know. Right?

They were around 12 minutes apart at that time. After lunch, my husband and I went to get gas and I had a stronger pressure wave on the way. He was getting nervous after that one and decided he’d cancel his afternoon plans and just stay with me and we could relax. I told him not to and I was sure they’d go away. He canceled anyway. On the way home from the gas station I had 2 more waves. They were now about 5 minutes apart and it had only been an hour since they got stronger. My husband said, “Are we going to have a baby today?” I said I didn’t think so but maybe he should pack his bag just in case. He told me to call the doctor to see what they say. I called as he’s running around the house tossing clothes in a bag 😂

They said if they were 5 minutes apart for the last hour to come on in. At that point, they were somewhere around 3-4 minutes. On the way, I started listening to my tracks. We got to the hospital at 2:00 pm but didn’t bother with letting our families (except my mom) know because I thought they would check me and tell me to go home because it wasn’t time.

We got checked in and up to L&D with the waves about 2-3 minutes and I was dilated 5-6 cm so it was definitely my birthing time (Hypnobabies word for labor)! I just really didn’t think it was time because I was so relaxed and the pressure waves weren’t uncomfortable like I expected.

After that, it was kind of a blur because it went so quickly. I spent most of the time on the floor on my hands and knees because that was most comfortable. At some point, the nurse had asked me if I was wanting anything for pain because she hadn’t brought it up when I got there. I told her that I hadn’t planned on anything but I’d let her know if I needed it later on. My husband and my mom were very supportive and read me some of their birthing prompts. When I would start to lose focus and control, my mom would remind me to go to my Special Safe Place, describing it, and asking if I could see it. That helped me relax deeper and regain focus. I birthed her on my hands and knees on the hospital bed with only 4 pushes. Our sweet baby girl was born at 4:25, just 2 hours and 25 minutes after getting to the hospital.

I never did get my light switch to turn off but I still felt incredibly relaxed and calm. I know that was because of my Hypnobabies training. I’m still surprised at how different it was than I expected. I kept thinking it would be uncomfortable but it wasn’t. I would say it was very intense pressure and a tight squeezing sensation. Waiting to find out her gender until she was born just added to the excitement of the day too! I am so happy that I got to have the all-natural birth that I wanted!
