Erin’s Hypnobabies Birth Center Waterbirth

“I never had any cervical checks and my midwife trusted me to know when my body was ready to push! My husband turned on Pushing Baby Out (Hypnobabies track just for pushing) track and it was amazing. I had some fear around pushing due to prolonged pushing with my son, but once I started, I felt so empowered, and I loved repeating the mantras on the track.”

I just had some mild cramping and pressure for about a week. It was a beautiful Saturday, so I went for a hike with my husband and our toddler son. We did about 5 miles round trip.

After getting home, I put my son down for his nap and rested on the couch. At 5:00 pm my water broke just as I was getting my son out of his crib. I was strep B + and it was a 75-minute drive to the birth center, so I called my husband to come home from the store. By the time I got off the phone with him I noticed my birthing waves (Hypnobabies term for contractions) were beginning. I was rushing around getting some extra toys packed for my son when my husband arrived home and called him parents to let them know we were coming over. By then my waves were getting stronger and I had to stop and breathe with them. We arrived at birthing center around 7:15 pm

We settled into our room and I was sitting on the bed waiting for the nurse to get my IV started for my antibiotics. She was in training and ended up blowing my line but continued to try and start the IV until my husband questioned why my hand was blowing up like that. I was in hypnosis and handling my birthing waves well. She tried again and failed before the midwife came in and realized how quickly things were progressing. So, she got my IV started. My position during this time was not great (sitting upright on edge of the bed with my feet dangling), but I had quickly gone into hypnosis once I arrived at the birth center and I still felt calm and controlled in this poor position. Initially, the midwife didn’t realize how quickly I was progressing because I was so calm, but when she came back into the room to check my IV and noticed I was becoming more vocal she quickly got things taken care of.

newborn baby on a scaleAt 8 pm I got into the birthing tub. It felt amazing! A few minutes later, I felt the urge to push. I never had any cervical checks and my midwife trusted me to know when my body was ready to push! My husband turned on Pushing Baby Out (Hypnobabies track just for pushing) track and it was amazing. I had some fear around pushing due to prolonged pushing with my son, but once I started, I felt so empowered, and I loved repeating the mantras on the track. Even my midwife was repeating them, and I felt so connected with her and with my baby during this time. I used the PEACE cue (Hypnobabies cue for instant physical comfort) which really helped me. I pushed for about 25 minutes and then our baby was born. We got out of the tub and she latched quickly. We didn’t even know she was a girl for about 10 minutes because we were too busy snuggling.

I’m so grateful to Hypnobabies for giving me the tools to have a calm, peaceful and empowering birth. I’m sad she is our last baby because I’d love to do it all over again.
