Emma’s Hypnobabies Hospital Induction

Emma’s Hypnobabies Hospital Induction

“My husband was there the whole time by my side and afterward he and my mom both said they couldn’t believe how instantly when he would put his hand on my forehead and say RELAX that my whole body would do just that (a well-practiced hypnosis technique).”

My water broke on Saturday at 7:30 pm while out to eat with some friends. My birthing time (Hypnobabies word for labor) was beginning! My husband and I drove home and got our bags and I grabbed my headphones and listened to my birthing day affirmations. We met my midwife at 10 pm at the hospital. I was not experiencing consistent or strong pressure waves (Hypnobabies word for contractions) so we tried an herbal cotton root bark to get things progressing for a couple of hours.

There was no change for me even as I walked around. We decided to start Pitocin which I was on from 2 am to 1 pm. From 10 am to 1 pm my waves became very intense- they were every 2-3 min and I was listening to my Easy First Stage track (Hypnobabies main birthing time track) off and on, staying in hypnosis all the time, but no change, only at a 2.5cm/60%. My blood pressure got super high and had proteins in my urine so they thought I was preeclamptic and might need a C section and didn’t want me at our small hospital as I was too high risk. So, my midwife and I decided to get me in an ambulance to a larger hospital nearby where they let me continue my birthing time again just more closely monitored as it’s bigger, much more ready for lots of situations, and 1-1 nurse’s hospital.

I was on Pitocin from 2-9 pm Sunday and when they checked I only had a small change to 3cm/80%…this was also very intense as the pressure waves were being induced since my body wasn’t making them on its own for whatever reason. I finally decided on an epidural at 940 pm. I literally SLEPT for 2 hours on and off with peanut ball between legs listening to my Deepening track (Hypnobabies hypnosis track to deepen the level of hypnosis) and by 1130 pm was 9cm/ 100%!!!!!! We waited until 3 am Monday for me to be fully dilated and start pushing because she was still so high, station -1.

I listened to my Easy First Stage and finally got down to station +1, but she needed to be a +3 for her to come out so my husband nurses and I decided to have me labor down for a while before I started pushing. Finally, I pushed from 3-7 am but again with no change in her station, I listened to Pushing Baby Out (Hypnobabies hypnosis track for pushing) once at the beginning but then stayed in my hypnosis at center the rest of the time just focusing on my body. Baby would come down during pushes, but she would not stay down.

Her heart rate was dropping during pushing and coming back up but she had no fluids left because of my waters breaking 36 hours prior so the doc, who was a little annoyed at me being such a strong advocate for myself I think!, was finally like, “Well I can help you birth her via forceps downstairs because if it doesn’t work you will need a C-section as you have lost all your fluids and baby is beginning to be distressed” (or I could keep trying to push for another 30 min or so but a new doc was coming on shift and I knew she was more pro C section). I decided to do the forceps-assisted vaginal birth. My husband and birth photographer went down to the birthing room with me. I pushed 4-5 times over 2 birthing waves and he helped pull her out and she was born crying and beautiful!!!!!!

Soooo not my birth preferences but we took everything in stride and she is perfect. I know I was able to make the right decisions at each step because I deserved to have a voice and be listened to. My affirmations helped me have the confidence to say no. My Hypnobabies helped me find strength and calmness during a long 36 hours of getting closer to baby. One of the nurses said I was the only woman she had seen go through her birthing time on Pitocin without having an epidural immediately. “You should teach a class on how to breathe through pressure waves!” – I said I TOOK a class! 😂 My husband was there the whole time by my side and afterward, he and my mom both said they couldn’t believe how instantly when he would put his hand on my forehead and say RELAX that my whole body would do just that (a well-practiced hypnosis technique). I’m so proud of myself and I’m so happy to have my little girl here safely in my arms!!
