Cricket’s First Natural Hypnobabies Hospital Birth

“I spent most of the time on the birthing ball listening to Easy First Stage (Hypnobabies main birthing time track) and Deepening Your Hypnosis (Hypnobabies track for deepening the level of hypnosis) and My hubby was amazing at helping give me with cues to help remind me to relax and stay comfortable.”

Some background —> Before my husband and I even agreed to have a fourth baby, I knew I wanted an all-natural birth. I’ve always believed that my body was designed to give birth and after three great epidural experiences, I wanted the FULL experience of what my body was capable of.

But after three peaceful epidural experiences, I also craved a calm + peaceful natural birth experience. I didn’t know if that actually existed until I had a few friends recommend Hypnobabies —> and after reading some testimonials, watching birth videos and doing more research I KNEW I had found my solution. So, I started the course at 28 weeks and loved it!

I fully expected to start our birthing time (Hypnobabies term for labor) with sweet Ford around 36 weeks, since that was when both the girls came. But that 36 weeks came and went with no signs of Ford! I ended up with Prodromal Waves (Hypnobabies term for contractions) at 37 weeks – I was at the hospital but never dilated past 5cm, which is where I was released, and I stayed right there for 2 weeks! My midwife offered to break my water but knowing I wanted all natural I declined and waited not so patiently for the time to come!

I woke up on Sunday, 6/7 at 39w2d and went on a short walk it was no different than any other day! I came home, we cleaned out the garage when I had a pressure wave (Hypnobabies term for contractions) around 11:30 am. I knew that this was different than my Braxton Hicks and I immediately told my husband That it was going to be baby day {I had also had my bloody show over the prior 12 hours so I knew the time was imminent!} I went ahead and took a shower around 12:15 pm because even though the waves were inconsistent and not strong… birthing time was starting. I called my parents at 12:45 pm to pick up the kids so we could relax, and I could settle into hypnosis, but I had a difficult time completely relaxing and finding a comfortable position! Which really surprised me as I expected to easily be able to fall into hypnosis.

We knew my birthing time would be faster, {given that I was already 5cm} but much to my surprise my birthing waves went almost immediately from inconsistent to 4-5 minutes apart and quickly picked up intensity. I still had a hard time getting completely comfortable at the house {especially knowing we needed to get everything packed up and in the car!} but when we left for the hospital around 1:45 pm I was able to get more comfortable and stay in hypnosis, which was fantastic. Even though the waves were strong and close together I stayed deeply relaxed. I hummed through each wave and was able to almost sleep between each one!

We got to the hospital around 2:15 pm and I was checked around 2:30 pm where we learned I was already 8 cm dilated! At that point my waves were 3-4 minutes apart and about 1.5 minutes long. I knew that I was so close to meeting Ford and I had ZERO doubts about my ability to birth without medication! It was a pretty cool feeling!

I stayed in hypnosis during my entire TWO hours of transformation (Hypnobabies term for transition) time. It wasn’t as deep a hypnosis as I was expecting, but it was there! I spent most of the time on the birthing ball listening to Easy First Stage (Hypnobabies main birthing time track) and Deepening Your Hypnosis (Hypnobabies track for deepening the level of hypnosis) and My hubby was amazing at helping give me with cues to help remind me to relax and stay comfortable. He also gave me counter pressure on the birthing ball as needed. I continued to hum through each wave {sometimes very loudly!} and I stayed comfortable through them all, other than a handful of incredibly strong and intense waves! I had some major discomfort during those. I really wanted to get in the shower at that point, but the waves were too close together for me to move, but I know it would have been even more comfortable under the hot water!

The hospital and my midwife were amazing through the process. My husband was able to answer all our questions and they respected the birth plan totally! It was a calm and peaceful few hour, only one nurse and my midwife came in a few times, but it was mostly just the two of us going through what we had practiced! I wore my headphones up until pushing time and continued be in a deeeply relaxed state between each one. I kept my eyes closed and laid my head on the bed the entire time. There was no nausea, no shaking, no heat waves!

Once transformation was {almost} complete and pushing time started we put on Pushing Your Baby Out (Hypnobabies track just for pushing), I’ll admit I was taken aback by the sensations! I had a hard time reading my body and wasn’t sure exactly what position my body needed to be in to push effectively. Also, I wasn’t completely dilated when I got “pushy” so my midwife helped guide his head past my cervix – that was NOT comfortable! But I got on the bed on my side with the help of my midwife.

After pushing through 3-4 waves with no progress and a lot of discomfort we all knew it wasn’t the right position for me. My midwife was AMAZING and helped give me warm compresses and massages before he came. At this point we were also all listening to a hypnosis track on a speaker and it was such a relaxed atmosphere, even with the intensity and discomfort of pushing and crazy sensations! I finally said I wanted to be on my back to push – I had no idea how close Ford was to coming at this point. I was just focused on trying to listen to my body and pushing when I needed. I will say this was the point that I felt the most discomfort mostly because I didn’t know what my body needed! But once we moved on my back and with one GINORMOUS strong and overwhelming wave and pushing (and at this point I cried out!) Ford came out in one wave! … it was just amazing fullness then release when he came out! Also, my water didn’t break until AFTER he was born! That was sort of crazy!

I had to have a few stitches, but We had a delayed cord clamping and I birthed the placenta naturally about 10 minutes after he was born, I felt fantastic and it continued to be a very calm few hours after his birth. No rushing, no crying, no pokes or prods, just a lot of snuggles, kisses and loving! Exactly how I imagined it should be!

I will say that even though I never wanted or needed medicine through the entire birthing process, AND it was a mostly calm event – it was still very intense! Being in transformation for two hours and having such a quick birthing time was no joke! Immediately after his birth I was disappointed because it wasn’t exactly as I pictured it would be + I lost hypnosis during pushing but I realize it was exactly what we needed and perfect in its own way 💞

I loved being so aware of what my body was going through and being able to feel all of the sensations! Also going through the process with my husband as my birth partner and support was INCREDIBLE! I wish I would have found Hypnobabies sooner so I could have used it with more of my births but I’m so glad we decided to do it this go round! Even recovery has been amazing – being able to work with my body I feel like I had way more energy afterwards because I was so relaxed through the birthing time!

I’m so thankful we had the gift of bringing Ford into the world that way and I will cherish the memories and experience forever! 💙
