Cheryl’s Peaceful, Very Fast Hypnobabies Home Birth

“I could feel my body was ready to birth our baby, but our midwife was still on her way. So, I told my husband “Baby is coming now” and had him play ‘Pushing Baby Out’ (Hypnobabies track just for pushing) track. About five minutes later our baby girl was born, caught by her Daddy.”

My 1st birth was a water birth at a birth center, unmedicated and without complications. There wasn’t much I would change about how that birth went. But going into this pregnancy we decided that we wanted a home birth and not having to get in the car during birthing was the most appealing part to me!! I also wanted to equip myself better this time around with tools I could use throughout the birthing time, hence my choice to do Hypnobabies.

For my first pregnancy, I attended the childbirth class at the birth center and did what I could to be informed about birth, but I didn’t really have tools to turn to other than my own intuition of what felt right in the moment (position changes, breathing, vocalizing). I got through the birth, but in hindsight, I know I held onto some fear and experienced hesitation in my mind and body when sensations intensified. This is where Hypnobabies proved very valuable to me.

I started the online home study program around 32 weeks. I wasn’t perfect when it came to getting all of my home study completed every day, but most days I did what I could and made it a point not to stress about it. I would fall asleep often since the majority of my available time ended up being at bedtime. Once I got to maintenance, I was much more diligent on making sure I listened to my tracks daily. I had a calm, relaxing and uncomplicated pregnancy.

At 39+1 weeks I lied awake from 4 am to 5 am noticing mild sensations in my lower abdomen and low back different from the practice waves I had been feeling in the previous week. They were somewhat regular, so I began listening to ‘Your Birthing Time Begins track’ (Hypnobabies reminder of all the tools and techniques for birthing) and fell back asleep. Upon waking at 8 am, I had some pink/red/brownish colored discharge when using the bathroom, but the mild sensations seemed to have stopped. As the day went on, I would have sporadic mild sensations but irregularly.

Around 7 pm, the sensations seemed to be coming more regularly, yet still mild, so I began our bedtime routine with our 4-year-old while my husband prepped things for the potential of birthing time (Hypnobabies word for labor) happening overnight. I took a shower and come 7:30 pm, I was feeling regular, increasingly stronger sensations, but able to breathe thru easily and talk calmly in between.

Once my son went to bed at 8:30 pm, I was able to put my headphones in and tried listening to Fear Clearing (Hypnobabies special track to release fear) and Deepening Your Hypnosis (Hypnobabies track that deepens the level of hypnosis) but found listening to ‘Easy First Stage’  (Hypnobabies main birthing time track) track to be the most helpful. I consistently used my PEACE cue (Hypnobabies cue for instant physical comfort) throughout my whole birthing time, particularly at the strongest parts of my pressure waves (Hypnobabies word for contractions). I also used RELEASE (cue to instantly enter hypnosis) and RELAX (cue to deepen hypnosis in the moment) cues at different points when It felt necessary. At this point, my waves were regular at approximately 45 secs, I was trying to time them but was unable. The position that felt best at this point was leaning over my bed, with my knees on the floor, so my belly could hang down with gravity.

At 9:30 pm we updated our midwife. I had a need to lean on something and had to really focus thru the waves at this point. My breath support was also increased. She asked if she should come over and I wasn’t sure what to tell her since it had only been a couple of hours, so we said we would check back in 30-60 mins to see how things were progressing.

At 9:45/10 pm I stopped listening to my track because I went in shower to help with the increased intensity of my pressure waves, but I continued using my cues internally. I knelt on a pad and leaned on my tub during the pressure wave, rested in between, all while the warm water of the shower was hitting my back. My cues really helped me keep my focus as the waves were getting stronger.

At 10:20 pm we notified my midwife that my legs were shaking during birthing wave and breath work needed was faster. Looking back on it, I was probably going through Transformation (Hypnobabies word for transition) at this point but didn’t know it. At 10:45 pm I needed counter pressure to get through my waves so pressing against tub or floor felt good. All this time my husband was communicating to our midwife with video clips and text so at this point I thought she was on her way but come 10:50 pm, It was clear she wasn’t so we let her know at that time that we needed her to come over.

11 pm I moved to our birthing tub. I used deeper breaths and counter pressure with each wave along with my RELEASE and PEACE cues. Leaning over side of tub/on all fours felt best. Come 11:10 pm things were progressing quickly, and I felt like baby had descended into my birth canal. I started feeling involuntary bearing down sensations with each wave and horse-lip breathing/grunting felt good with these new pressure waves. I could feel my body was ready to birth our baby, but our midwife was still on her way. So, I told my husband “Baby is coming now” and had him play ‘Pushing Baby Out’ (Hypnobabies track just for pushing) track.

About five minutes later our baby girl was born, caught by her Daddy. She cried immediately and he helped place her on my chest. Our midwife arrived 10 minutes later. Our midwife said it was a “precipitous birth” but looking back on it, I missed the important note for mothers who are using Hypnobabies for the first time with a subsequent baby’s birth. The quick reference booklet mentions not to compare a previous births sensation (such as discomforts and length of time) to their other babies’ birthing to determine if you’re in your birthing time.

So, we ended up doing exactly what they said may happen, an unintended do-it-yourself home birth. I was more profoundly relaxed and using far less effort, since Hypnobabies was working for me, and I believe that is why my birthing time only lasted a few hours. So, those of you in this position, make note of this section and pay attention to the physical and emotional signs of birth progressing as the booklet clearly states!

We are grateful all went smoothly; baby was healthy and birthed with no complications. My husband was a Rockstar, staying calm while taking on his new role in the birth. My body and my baby knew exactly what to do!! Despite the quick progression and unintended unassisted birth, not once did fear or hesitation enter our experience. Her entrance into our world was peaceful. We are grateful to have her as a daily reminder that despite everything else going on in the world today, life willfully goes on and to always choose peace over fear.
