Sunday 8/19 just after 4 a.m. I woke up to my water breaking. I thought I was peeing myself until I stood up from bed and sure enough there was a big gush of fluid. I woke my husband up and he didn’t believe me until he saw the floor! We started getting our things ready and I played Your Birthing Time Begins out loud. I didn’t feel any pressure waves yet, so we took a little walk around the courtyard of our condos a few times to see if it would help. I also didn’t wish to stay at home long since my water had broken, and I had lost a considerable amount of fluid, my belly even felt much smaller, and I was concerned about cord compression. We headed to the hospital and got there around 6:30 a.m.

I was as starting to get very mild pressure waves. The nurse checked my cervix and I was barely 2 cm, 80% effaced. Obviously, I would’ve liked to have spent most of my birthing time at home, but with my water breaking my gut instinct told me to be where baby can be monitored periodically. I got a saline lock. We walked around the hall for a bit, used the birthing ball, and I tried lunges during pressure waves. I listened to Deepening hypnosis and Easy First Stage. We did the Abdominal Lift and Tuck around 10 a.m. during pressure waves. They were getting stronger, but I could still manage them pretty comfortably. After 11 a.m., the doctor came in and talked Pitocin with me, which I knew was going to inevitably be brought up since time was ticking and I really wasn’t in active birthing time.

I knew what getting Pitocin could mean (more interventions) but looking at big picture, I felt it was the best option to avoid things like c-section and antibiotics later on.

Pitocin started around 12:30 p.m. I was starting to get somewhat stronger pressure waves with lots of back pressure around that time anyways, but after the Pitocin was started things obviously took off. I remember feeling very tired suddenly, probably because I was so excited all morning and didn’t rest much. I tried the ball for a bit but then laid down on my side. I was getting very strong pressure waves and lots of low back pressure, my husband had to give counter pressure in my low back practically until pushing time. The nurse checked me around 2:30 p.m. and she said I was 4-5 cm, 100% effaced.

I started getting nauseated, and every pressure wave I felt the need to pull on something while my husband gave counter pressure in my low back. My mom had arrived and started putting cool rags on my head because I felt so hot, and she read scripts. I couldn’t really get comfortable, so I leaned over the back of the bed and would pull on the bed during waves. I got to a breaking point and didn’t think I could do it, in my head I kept thinking I wasn’t progressing, and I wasn’t really able to stay in hypnosis at that point. I felt a ton of pressure and started having involuntary pushing. The nurse checked me at 3:30 p.m. and I was 10 cm. Pitocin was shut off by then!

I tried pushing leaning over the back of the bed and the doctor was pretty open to it. We played pushing baby out, but I couldn’t really hear it over my own low tone groaning! My husband changed it to the relaxation music for that reason. I felt I needed to pull with my arms, so I got in a sort of lithotomy position and they had me hold onto the squat bar. I didn’t like it, so I tried handles on the sides of the bed, and I was able to push effectively that way. 5 pushes and he was here! He needed a vacuum but just barely to angle his head better as I pushed.

I definitely lost my hypnosis in the end, but it still helped me a lot and I’ll do Hypnobabies all over again. I think I was using my logical thinking and nurse brain too much when we started the Pitocin which made things difficult. But I had an otherwise unmedicated natural birth and we are so happy!
