Catherine’s Hypnobabies Change of Plans C-Section

“My normally anxious self would be very stressed out thinking about this major change in plans, but my hypnosis helped me to be completely okay and comfortable with this. After all, this meant that I was going to meet my baby girl sooner rather than later!”

May 23rd was my guess date (Hypnobabies term for due date) and it came and went, even though I was convinced that this baby girl would come early. I had my 40-week appointment on the 26th and was just barely dilated at this point even though I had been feeling plenty of practice waves for a couple of weeks. Since there was minimal progression and baby girl was running out of room, the doctor wanted to have me induced the next day at 6 pm. I was really hoping that I would go into my birthing time (Hypnobabies term for labor) on my own as I wanted to try to have a natural birth, however, with the help of my tracks and Relax cue (Hypnobabies cue for deepening the level of hypnosis), I was able to be okay with this change in plans.

I woke up the next day (induction day!) feeling so excited to finally meet my baby girl but also woke up extremely nauseous and not able to eat much throughout the day. It was a little hard for me to focus on my hypnosis, but my husband was constantly reminding me to keep up with my tracks because they helped me so much during my pregnancy.

It was finally time for us to head to the hospital around 4:30 and I took a minute before getting into the car to get into hypnosis and turn my switch to center (Hypnobabies technique for being in eyes open hypnosis). The ride to the hospital was very peaceful and calm-just how I had envisioned it to be during my practice of hypnosis leading up to my birthing day.

Once we got to the hospital, I was about 2cm dilated. However, I did not want to start on any medication right away, I wanted to try different positions and moving before resorting to any medicine. The doctor and nurses were very open and respectful of my decisions (thank you Hypnobabies for giving me the confidence to voice my opinion!)

Hours went by and I had only progressed to about 5cm so it was finally time to start some medicine to see if that would do the trick. However, 22 hours after we got to the hospital, I was still not progressing as much as I should have been so the doctor said that it might be time for a c-section. My normally anxious self would be very stressed out thinking about this major change in plans, but my hypnosis helped me to be completely okay and comfortable with this. After all, this meant that I was going to meet my baby girl sooner rather than later!

I tried my best to stay in hypnosis during this time, but it was difficult with how quickly everything started happening. While in the OR, I ended up having a reaction to some of the anesthesia that I could not focus on staying in hypnosis. However, before I knew it, my baby girl was finally here and all of this change in plans was totally worth it. Savannah Beth was born on May 28th, 9lbs 5oz and 21in long. She is completely healthy and the biggest blessing!

Although my birthing day did not go as I had hoped it would, Hypnobabies helped me get through my pregnancy in this time of Covid and this major change in plans on my birthing day. For expecting mamas out there-keep up with your hypnosis, I truly believe that even if your day does not go as planned, Hypnobabies can still be such a huge help!
