“On Saturday night, June 8th, I started having pressure waves (Hypnobabies word for contractions) around 10:30 pm. I instinctively knew it was my birthing time and started my birthing playlist. I was able to use the tracks to drift off into a light sleep while my pressure waves became more consistent.”

My first Hypnobabies birth (second baby)! I started Hypnobabies around 25 weeks after a dear friend recommended it to me. I was having a lot of anxiety around birthing again since my first birth experience was 28 hours long and very painful. Even though I had a successful home birth with my first baby, I felt completely unprepared to handle the emotions and physical sensations that accompanied birth.

Having Hypnobabies this time around was such a game-changer. What I loved most about it was how it gave me the opportunity to connect with my baby and take time for myself every day. I diligently followed the program and listened to the tracks daily (almost always falling asleep/into deep hypnosis) during my daughter’s nap time.

When it came to my birthing time (Hypnobabies word for labor), I was more excited than anxious about what to expect and how I was going to align with whatever scenarios might arise.

On Saturday night, June 8th, I started having pressure waves (Hypnobabies word for contractions) around 10:30 pm. I instinctively knew it was my birthing time and started my birthing playlist. I was able to use the tracks to drift off into a light sleep while my pressure waves became more consistent. Then around 2:30 am, my waves became more intense and closer together so I woke my husband for support. From that moment on I chose not to use my Hypnobabies tracks because everything was progressing really quickly and I was surprisingly uncomfortable and distracted listening to the tracks. I needed to be upright, mobile, and moving my hips around and I was unable to access or tap into my hypno-anesthesia by then {Editors note: Hypnobabies is designed to be used while upright, moving around and eating, drinking and communicating while still deeply in hypnosis}. However, I was totally ok with this and did not get upset or panic.

At 3:30 am we called my midwife, who was actually at another birth about an hour away! This didn’t faze me though as I trusted we could handle whatever we needed to with or without her there. In lieu of her presence (since she was at a complicated birth), she sent her assistant and another midwife in town with 25 years of experience. Around 5 am I asked my mother to move into our bedroom and sleep with our daughter so we could use the guest room and let her sleep as long as possible.

Moments before the midwives arrived around 7 am, my water broke (just like in the movies, which was a huge surprise!) and things progressed even quicker. I used my breath and made deep, guttural sounds to move the energy of my pressure waves down and quickly felt the undeniable urge to push. I felt so powerful and connected to my body and my baby and put my hand inside myself to feel my baby’s head emerging. This was the most incredible feeling! My baby was coming out!

After about 4 pushes my baby came out at 9:03 am and to our pleasant surprise we now have a baby boy! (The ultrasound we had at 20 weeks told us we were having a girl). Within 10 minutes I pushed my placenta out and we cut the umbilical cord about an hour later. My baby latched beautifully and immediately as well. I was so delighted that I had a smooth, uncomplicated, and quick birthing experience. It was completely different than my first birth!

Despite choosing not to use my Hypnobabies tracks throughout the entirety of my birthing experience, I feel I had the birth of my dreams and that it was almost exactly like I had envisioned (even with the possibility of my midwife not being there!). Just because I didn’t feel my hypno-anesthesia the way I had hoped, that is not to say that the skills and tools I learned from Hypnobabies were ineffective. I believe they contributed to my ability to be 100% present, confident, trusting, and completely allowing my body to surrender to the natural and primal process of birth. I feel so empowered and in awe of the female body. We are AMAZING!!!

I am so grateful for the tools, resources, and support that Hypnobabies provided in preparation for this wonderfully transformative experience that I will forever cherish.
