We are often asked, “How is the Hypnobabies Home-Study Course for Expectant Mothers different from other self-study hypnobirthing programs?”
Benefits of Hypnobabies Self-Study Course
On this page we will answer that question by telling you what is unique and exclusive to our Hypnobabies self-study course (Hypnobabies Home-Study Course for Expectant Mothers), without disparaging any other particular method.
Other hypnobirthing courses have excellent programs and benefits, that have helped many women have better, more relaxed births. We recognize that and celebrate other programs and what they do every day for birthing women!
Want to learn what other families are saying about Hypnobabies vs hypnobirthing? Just do a quick Google search and you’ll be amazed – there are so many testimonials from Hypnobabies moms who have taken another kind of childbirth course first, and then gone on to enjoy their Hypnobabies program and birth experience. They are happy to share their experiences online so that other moms can be encouraged to use Hypnobabies. Here are three to start, and there are more below:
In Hypnobabies, one of our objectives is to help our pregnant couples bond with their babies in utero, which automatically happens when they are practicing their Hypnobabies hypnosis techniques together. We also teach expectant moms how to stay healthy and low-risk through nutrition and prenatal exercise. Our students learn that they can trust their own bodies’ (and their babies’) innate wisdom during the process of birth, and couples learn how to be excellently informed consumers. Moms become self-reliant and confident about birthing their babies naturally, in safety and in comfort.
Through Hypnobabies “Fear Clearing” sessions, we help our expectant mothers to overcome negative belief systems and cultural programming. Hypnobabies guides mothers through their preparation for an easier, more comfortable birth experience, and teaches them skills that they will use for the rest of their lives.
Hypnobabies is not a typical ”hypnobirthing” course. There are only a few self-study birth hypnosis programs and we have the most in-depth preparation for childbirth education bundled with our childbirth hypnosis tracks. Hypnobabies is far more detailed, thorough and highly effective, because it teaches hypnotic anesthesia techniques, from Gerald Kein’s amazing, “Painless Childbirth” program.
Hypnobabies Self- Study Course contains the same kinds of “somnambulistic” (very deep and effective) hypnosis techniques used by people who undergo surgery with hypnosis as their *only* anesthetic! Other hypnobirthing programs teach simple visualization and/or guided imagery and “spot hypnosis”. Since we teach real medical hypnosis techniques, which address the mind, body and emotions of both the mother and her baby, our students’ satisfaction rate is very high, which is also very gratifying to our instructors and the staff here at Hypnobabies!
Hypnobabies also teaches a unique form of hypnosis called “Eyes-Open Childbirth Hypnosis”, which allows each wonderful Hypno-mom to walk and talk, and move around freely while remaining deeply in hypnosis, physically comfortable and very relaxed yet … fully present, aware and in touch with her body, her baby and her support team. Most Hypnobabies mothers report being “completely comfortable” while doing so. “Listen-only” hypnobirthing programs require the mother to be complete immobile in order to remain in hypnosis, which can impede the progress of labor, and the descent and positioning of her baby. An upright and mobile mother who is using Hypnobabies “Eyes-Open Childbirth Hypnosis” means a faster and easier birthing!
We also fully prepare our Birth Partners by providing them with their own extremely detailed Birth Partner’s Guide booklet for labor, which thoroughly explains their role in the preparation for baby’s birth, as well as how they can assist the Hypno-Mom during birthing. Birth Partners are an integral part of the preparation process if the mom wants them to be, and *they have their own hypnosis cues which help keep them relaxed and confident about pregnancy and childbirth*. Birth Partners have a very special role to play as they await the birth of their precious newborn and we teach them to lovingly embrace that. This is unique to Hypnobabies and we are very proud of this feature.
Hypnobabies can also be more easily used by Single Mothers, or those mothers whose partners are unable to participate in their birth preparation process. With 14 hypnosis audio tracks for birth preparation and 4 tracks just for labor as well as all of our hypnosis compounding (repetition), our single Hypnobabies mothers can easily enjoy childbirth too! All of our hypno-anesthesia techniques can be easily learned, practiced and used by the single mother, as well as with a Birth Partner or doula.
Hypnobabies also provides thorough and *complete* (see below) preparation for childbirth education, which is often lacking in other birth hypnosis programs. Providing complete preparation for childbirth in our Hypnobabies classes and our Home-Study Course, ensures that our wonderful students will not have to take other natural childbirth classes whose philosophy is so different that it negates what they have learned in our birth hypnosis classes. Focusing on and embracing Hypnobabies’ techniques, cues and philosophies is extremely important for each of our Hypno-moms, to achieve their birthing comfort goals as well as learning all about their pregnancy and childbirth choices.
“Pain management and pain coping skills” are the exact opposite of what is taught in our Hypnobabies program, and counter-productive to the all the positive and encouraging messages, language and hypnosis techniques used in Hypnobabies. We teach mothers how to remain comfortable during labor and delivery by “re-booting” their internal software and using real hypno-anesthesia techniques, instead of “managing inevitable pain”. The fact that we teach complete childbirth education as well as excellent hypno-anesthesia, helps make Hypnobabies a very successful childbirth preparation program whether mothers choose to take a Hypnobabies class with an instructor or to learn our Hypnobabies Home-Study Course on her own.

Our Hypnobabies Home-Study Course begins in a very special way; before learning hypno-anesthesia, you’ll be invited to meet your baby and bond with him/her by listening to 2 Hypnobabies hypnosis tracks entitled, “Your Special Place” and “Easy, Comfortable Childbirth”, which teach you how to enter hypnosis easily, relax deeply, and begin to learn how childbirth can easily be so comfortable. These tracks also “re-culture” our expectant mothers from a lifetime of negative cultural conditioning about the experience of childbirth.
Each Hypno-Mom learns powerful hypnosis skills combined with the deepest physical relaxation beginning with her first Hypnobabies audio tracks. This conditions her mind, her body and her emotions for the more in-depth hypno-anesthesia techniques which are to come! This preparation makes it much easier for her learn her Hypnobabies hypno-anesthesia techniques and to add cues and techniques during each week of her Hypnobabies Home-Study course.
Our Home-Study Course also prepares the Birth Partner (if the mother has one) to support the Hypno-mom during hypnosis practices and during the baby’s birth itself. Our expectant mothers also learn how to use their new self-hypnosis techniques for many other things: nausea elimination, back and hip discomforts, insomnia, pre-term labor, pre-term bleeding, perineal massage, internal exams, turning a breech baby, to encourage a ‘late baby to come out’, etc.
The most important reason Hypnobabies mothers are so satisfied with the effectiveness of their hypnosis techniques is that our Hypnobabies Moms learn and practice hypnosis every day, which makes all the difference when programming the inner mind for an easier, more comfortable natural birth. Hypnotherapists call this, “compounding through repetition” which means that the more often a technique is practiced and the more frequently a suggestion is heard and accepted, the more powerful the effect becomes…very important when a mother is creating instant physical comfort with her hypno-anesthesia techniques.
Also unique to Hypnobabies is our very successful Hypnobabies “Birth Visualization” audio track, in which you mentally and emotionally practice entering labor, experience your comfortable Hypnobabies birthing techniques and give birth easily and in a very detailed and personal way. This “mental birthing rehearsal” is very important to the process of creating your easy and comfortable birthing, and is listened to many times until your Hypno-baby is born. This repetition helps to program your subconscious mind to produce the kind of birthing you want. Many athletes and public speakers of all kinds use “mental rehearsals” to prepare for an event with great success, and so do our Hypno-moms!
Our students also never have to guess how to use their Hypnobabies Childbirth Hypnosis techniques and deepening cues during childbirth; our program is very clear and concise and includes a Quick Reference Guide booklet for each birthing couple to use during their labor. We also include our wonderful “Birth Guide” audio tracks which keep our Hypno-mom deeply in hypnosis with constant hypno-anesthesia, hypnotic deepening and relaxation suggestions, for the first stage of labor as well as *extra comfort for the pushing phase*. Our Birth Guide tracks also include “positive birth team” suggestions throughout, allowing each birthing mother to feel supported, in-sync and communicate easily with caregivers and family. Birth professionals are often surprised at how completely relaxed and physically comfortable our Hypno-moms are, how easily they are able to move around and communicate and still be deeply hypnotized, and how “in control” they are of their bodies, minds and emotions. Our Hypnobabies students tell us that our Birth Guide tracks are “Pure Gold!”
Our SUPPORT for our Hypnobabies Home Study Course mothers is unequaled – we are always available for support, help and encouragement, before, during and after your Hypno-baby is born. 1) We have a free online Hypnobabies Moms Support group for support and encouragement from Hypnobabies Instructors and other Hypno-moms, providing you with a community where you can safely get your questions answered. We have daily tips and suggestions, childbirth hypnosis birth stories and a great deal of camaraderie. 2) If you prefer more personal help, you will be invited to contact our Home Study Supervisor who can help with any questions or issues during your Hypnobabies journey. 3) Hypnobabies Home Study Advantage Classes: As a Home Study Hypno-mom, you and your Birth Partner can benefit greatly from additional, detailed, supportive information and demonstrations on using hypnosis for more physical comfort during your labor’s transition and pushing stages, from a certified Hypnobabies Instructor. You’ll also get the opportunity to participate in a Hypnobabies Birthing Rehearsal, learning to work together with your Hypnobabies cues and techniques, just as you’ll do on your birthing day! Building your childbirth hypnosis skills and your confidence level, and bringing your Hypnobabies Home Study Course practice and program techniques together is what the HSA class is all about!
Other programs have shorter and simpler childbirth hypnosis courses and they may contain some excellent hypnobirthing “tools”, but none contain the amount of information, in depth, somnambulistic hypno-anesthesia, training, practice and support of Hypnobabies. All elements have been carefully designed to work together and the results are amazing even to us! Not all of our Hypno-moms will have a completely pain-free birthing, yet for most of our mothers (who learned, practiced and used Hypnobabies as directed in our written materials), their labors are *much* easier and more comfortable than they would have been with any other childbirth method, and this makes all the difference in the world to so many women. Very gratifying!
Hypnobabies is an excellent choice for all expectant mothers who desire Hypnosis for Childbirth that works beautifully!

Our Hypno-moms explain why they chose Hypnobabies over regular “hypnobirthing”!
Krystle: I chose Hypnobabies because of the many great reviews I read online, and the science behind it. I’m a super analytical person and even though I’m in a masters counseling program have held the same misconceptions about hypnosis as most of America (guy on stage with a magician clucking like an idiot 😂) but after talking to women who have used Hypnobabies I decided to peruse their website out of curiosity. Tons of information backed by research that I could identify in my current studies really pushed me to give it a try since a non medicated birth is my ideal. So I ordered the home course and have fell so in love with it I have even ordered additional tracks for the postpartum period.
Krista: Reviews that I found online were glowing, and Hypnobabies has a full home study course, and I also liked that it’s a complete childbirth course. I was in a master’s counseling psychology program and one of my top professors actually did hypnotherapy for various things, like addiction and certain anxiety disorders. My Hypnobabies program fits with what he describes for his hypnotherapy sessions.
Christa: Hypnobirthing was far more limited in scope so I chose Hypnobabies because of the variety of tracks and techniques. Hypnobabies, from my research, is more empowering and supportive.
Fonda: I chose Hypnobabies because it came highly recommended by name from a few other large family moms. I had a lot of anxiety and some panic attacks leading up to my last kid’s birth and I wanted some tools to help me manage that. I’ve had five of my six kids at home and I had somehow gotten stuck into a negative thought loop and I needed some help breaking out of that. I’m 32 weeks pregnant now and I feel much more balanced and calm this time around by doing Hypnobabies. It’s helped my anxiety surrounding birth tremendously. The tracks are so peaceful and relaxing, and they have such a positive effect on me already.
Susan: I didn’t understand the differences in my first pregnancy and took a HypnoBirthing class. There weren’t any local Hypnobabies classes at the time, so my thinking was that a live class would be better for a FTM than a home study class. Unfortunately, I quickly learned that assumption was wrong. The HypnoBirthing class taught us almost nothing about birth and provided very little information on what to do during the birth. My husband and I left the last class with a belief that birth could be comfortable, but no idea how to achieve that. It didn’t go well. So when we were expecting our second baby, we used the Hypnobabies Home Study and were SO much happier with it. I literally learned more in the first half-hour after opening the Hypnobabies package than I had in all 5 weeks of our HypnoBirthing class. The depth of knowledge and power of the hypnosis skills blew the little we learned in the earlier class out of the water. Hypnobabies helped us have a much more enjoyable, comfortable an safer birth.
Rosie M: I took a Mongan method hypnobirthing course in person and was very unsatisfied with how few techniques were taught (it seemed heavily weighted towards visualizations and light on self-hypnosis) and how few recordings were included. I remember being told to listen to the same recording over and over (maybe there was a second one, but I’m not even sure of that.) There were no additional recordings for the actual birthing day. Personally, I didn’t feel prepared after that course, so I did Hypnobabies home study (no instructors in my area at that time), and I loved it. It is much more comprehensive as a course, with a lot more hypnosis techniques that really work and the affirmations completely changed how I felt about being pregnant, from it being something I had to get through to have a baby (but wasn’t enjoying), to an enjoyable, confident time in my life. Hypnobabies works amazingly well for pregnancy and birth!!! My insurance only covered in-person courses, but the out-of-pocket money I spent on Hypnobabies was worth every penny since it made such a difference in my life and in my birth.
Carrie H: I read a book about a “hypnobirthing” technique that was not Hypnobabies with my first baby which I stumbled across in the last 6 weeks of my first pregnancy and used some of their techniques which helped me have a peaceful but still very uncomfortable natural birth. For the second baby I figured I was on the right track but wanted to start earlier and discovered that Hypnobabies was way more in depth and way more effective. It was! So happy I switched.
Raylee: I did a more simplified hypno-birth technique with my first birth (11 years ago!) and our doula said for this pregnancy that I would LOVE Hypnobabies! So far it’s been amazing, with so much a lot more information and many more hypnosis techniques that are way more in-depth. Already it’s made a huge difference in my pregnancy comfort and I can’t wait to use it for my baby’s birth!
*Update: My birth was amazing, I never imagined that it could go so well with hardly any pain and I was so calm too, I had no fear at all. Wouldn’t give birth any other way. 🙂
Bonnie V: Second birth. For our first birth we used Bradley and did a home birth… very painful so hoping to relax more this time around using Hypnobabies and already I have so many hypnosis techniques to use that I’m really look forward to my baby’s birth. Never thought I’d say that!
Kristal M: We did Bradley with our first and Hypnobabies with our second too… WORLD of difference in pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experiences for the better with Hypnobabies personally!😍 I was in so much pain trying to “relax” with Bradley techniques but my Hypnobabies birth was just amazing. I had some discomfort but I was overjoyed that I could stop it in its tracks with my hypnosis techniques. The nursing staff was shocked!
Tanya L: I used HypnoBirthing with my first and didn’t learn much that I could use to help in labor so that birth was very difficult. I’ve had both of my last 2 babies using the Hypnobabies Home Study course. I highly recommend it. I had an amazing birth experience with both, although both births were very different from each other. Both were spontaneous start of birthing time and totally natural with no need for medication.
Carrie H: I read the HypnoBirthing book with my first baby and it did help me have an un-medicated natural birth however I did not learn actual hypnosis from it. Hypnobabies online course taught me so much more. I was able to have a very fast mostly comfortable natural birth with my second baby.
More – Recently, one of the moms on our Hypnobabies Support Group asked: “Has anyone used hypnobirthing for their first child and Hypnobabies for their second? I am just getting started. I didn’t do so well with my first child using hypnobirthing. My pressure waves were very intense and I was never able to relax. My doula said women do much better with Hypnobabies. I am optimistic and practicing daily but I would love to hear any encouragement from moms who had a much better experience with Hypnobabies after having a hard time with previous deliveries.”
Kayte T: 2 traumatic deliveries here. 3rd was a Hypnobabies birth and it was great. While there are of course several influencing factors, I really do feel that the Hypnobabies helped overall.
Elaine W: I used hypnobirthing with my 2nd and Hypnobabies with my 3rd. Night and day difference. My 2nd birthing experience was much faster than my first, and I was in better control…but I still felt like something was missing. I had someone suggest Hypnobabies and it was amazing. When we left for the hospital I wasn’t even sure if it was really my birthing time (labor). I was holding my sweet girl 2 hours later. If we have another, I will definitely use Hypnobabies again!
Corrie C: I used hypnobirthing with my second and Hypnobabies with my third and fourth. This is a way more well rounded program with amazing supports. I highly recommended it!
Teresa A: I used hypnobirthing for my first and Hypnobabies for my 2nd. With the regular hypnobirthing I felt like I learned very little hypnosis – maybe some visualization. I actually learned how to use hypnosis and hypno anesthesia with Hypnobabies. I also really appreciate that Hypnobabies talks about pushing, ways to push, and that it’s ok to push. My hypnobirthing class, pushing was a bad thing, we were supposed to only breath the baby down.
Elaine W: Yes I 100% agree with this 👆🏻👆🏻👆🏻
Regina C: This is my first experience but when having to decide, reading online forums and asking friends and colleagues around, I got similar feedback as above. Plus some women said they felt kind of judged with the hypnobirthing approach. This insight helped me decide straight for Hypnobabies 😉
Christina B: Yup. Much preferred Hypnobabies and neither of my births were “easy”, but I felt Hypnobabies gave me much better tools.
Samantha Z: Yes! I did this very thing and I LOVED Hypnobabies the second time so much more. My husband even commented at the end of my second birthing, “So that was easy peasy right?” So I definitely was able to use my hypnosis and relax and it worked for me!! Hypnobirthing alone didn’t prepare me nearly as well with my first birth, just not enough of anything.
Erin E: I took both courses for my first (NOT advised!). I preferred the Hypnobabies material and thought it was more practical/useful. I never used the hypnobirthing material but I did use the Hypnobabies material.
Lynda H: I did hypnobirthing for my first and it didn’t help AT ALL. I felt overwhelmed and underprepared. Second birth was Hypnobabies and pain free. Third birth was Hypnobabies and was more intense (short, very intense labor) but still a great birth.
Lynette R: I did Lamaze with my first 2 pregnancies and yeah, that didn’t help. Discovered Hypnobabies with my 3rd. I loved the program so much I used it in total for 4 pregnancies.
Aileen L: Yes. I did Hypnobirthing with my second and Hypnobabies with my third birth. My hypnosis with Hypnobabies was so much deeper and more effective! (I feel like Hypnobirthing is not TRUE hypnosis – it’s more like guided visualization and there is a big difference). My third birth was my longest (due to the baby coming sunny-side up), but it was also my most comfortable thanks to my Hypnobabies hypnosis tools. You will rock your birth as long as your practice your hypnosis and use your Hypnobabies techniques at your birth.
Susan M: I took HypnoBirthing with my first baby and was disappointed by the class and how unprepared we were for our birth. I used the Hypnobabies Home Study for my second and third babies, and it was WAY more informative and effective. In fact, my midwives had seen HypnoBirthing births regularly for years but at the time had never attended a Hypnobabies birth before, and nearly sent me home because I was “too calm”. They honestly didn’t even think I was in my birthing time (labor) until I convinced them to give me a cervical exam and they discovered that I was fully dilated. 🙂
Dana N: I did Bradley with my first two and Hypnobabies with my third. I was worried that I would have a hard time because I already had experienced the sensations of childbirth, but Hypnobabies worked really well for me.
