I wanted to share my rainbow baby’s birth story. Sweet Runa arrived Feb 12th at 1:29am 6lbs 14oz

New parent skin to skin with newborn babyOn February 11th I had a doctor’s appointment at 40 weeks. At this point we were all surprised baby wasn’t already here as we had very promising waves (Hypnobabies term for contractions) and progress the week prior. I was not quite enjoying the final weeks of my pregnancy physically and opted for a gentle membrane sweep to see if that could give us the push we needed (spoiler alert it did ).

We headed home and went about our routine, played some board games, and waited. The entire day I was having waves but not at a consistent interval, we did some spinning babies exercises and abdominal lift and tucks with little change. By 7:30 pm I decided to text my mom and ask if she would be able to watch our toddler that night if it was the real deal, though I was still in disbelief it was. Over the next two hours things began to pick up and become more consistent, I was now focusing on using my tools. At 9:30 I called my mom and my midwife to let them know it was baby time! My parents dashed over to grab the baby and we headed on the 45-minute drive to the birth center.

During the car ride I popped my headphones in, played “Your Birthing Time Begins” and focused on relaxing. The ride to the birth center flew by and we beat our midwife there (it was a busy night with another birth already happening).

Once we got into the center at 10:30 my midwife started the tub and I consented to a cervical check to find I was at an 8. I hopped in the tub and just let the water relax me even deeper. I stayed in there until I felt the need to move around and used some other positions including the peanut ball. At this point we had 3 midwives and a training midwife with us, as the other birth had completed. I love every one of these women and am so glad they were all there for this birth.

By this time, I was a 9 with a lip of cervix blocking baby, my midwife attempted to manually hold it while I used my waves to overcome it. When that didn’t work, I tried squats and sitting on the toilet. At this point I needed a bit of rest, it was nearing 1 am and I had not slept well the night prior, so I opted for nitrous gas. It was a wonderful reminder to focus on my breath!Newborn baby covered in a floral blanket

After I bit the waves were becoming more pushy. Another midwife checked me and suggested we break my big bulging bag of waters. Once we did everything fell into place. With my next wave I pushed my sweet baby deep into the birth canal. The second wave brought her head, shoulders and half her body. The force was a bit much and she proceeded to spit a stomach full of amniotic fluid all over the 5th midwife who had just arrived, narrowly missing her face. The next wave the rest of her body came out and it was a beautiful chorus of excitement from everyone. Our sweet baby was the final baby the training midwife needed to catch before she graduated her training.

It’s so fun to look back on my births and see both the differences and similarities. My transformation (Hypnobabies term for transition) stages have been exactly the same for all 3 of my babies. Birthing is such an empowering feeling. I am so thankful to Hypnobabies for helping me to find my strength and giving me such powerful tools.

HERE is another great Birth Center story!
